Rapper Xzibit Keeps it Real
Dec 10 2006 / Los Angeles, CALat34 caught up with rapper Xzibit at the Arby’s Action Sports Awards in Los Angeles, CA and its clear that the “Pimp My Ride” star doesn’t let fame go to his head.
Xzibit is no stranger to the West Coast; he became a major player in the West Coast rap scene when he joined forces with Snoop Dogg and rapper/ mega-producer Dr. Dre. Dre clearly has an eye for talent, taking credit for scooping up stars Eminem, and 50 Cent, so in 2000 when he invited Xzibit to be the youngest rapper on the popular ‘Up in Smoke’ tour- it was a big deal.
Since being discovered, Xzibit has put out six albums and has appeared on many music related DVDs, but some might say his real fame is on the small screen. In 2004 ‘X’ landed a hosting gig on MTV’s makeover reality show “Pimp My Ride” where Xzibit takes a worthless piece of junk car and fixes its up (or “pimps it) to make it a ridiculously luxurious car. We are talking televisions in the headrest, glow in the dark seats, chrome wheels, and things you would never ever imagine needing in a car.
Part of the reason “Pimp My Ride” continues to be such a hit, is the amount of personality Xzibit brings out on screen. His television presence landed him big screen gigs such as cameo roles in movies like Eminem’s “8 Mile” (2002), Disney’s “The Country Bears” (2002), Jennifer Aniston’s thriller “Derailed” (2005), and the “Gridiron Gang” (2006) with actor/ pro wrestler ‘The Rock.’
Lat34 had the chance to chat with Mr. Personality himself, Xzibit, in the VIP Lounge at the Arby’s Action Sports Awards, here is what he had to say…
X: No fruit in the drink. Man law no fruit in the drink. That’s just man law. No fruit. (he is referring to the slice of lemon on the side of his drink
Lat34: So Fruit is as girly as an umbrella in your drink, huh?
Lat34: How did it go? Heard you broke some rules out there, what was that about?
X: Yeah I broke the rules that’s nothing new. They just shot it up straight up in the air like a volleyball ya know; they asked me something about Pimp My Ride- I didn’t come here for that. Ya’ know what I am saying? Let’s just takes it somewhere else (laughs)
Lat34: How was it getting dressed for the event, did you stand in front of closet for hours? What was the inspiration?
X: I am a simple guy, my shirts cost like 10 bucks… Pro Club girl you can’t go wrong- straight from the hood.

Lat34: So have you done any action sports in your day?
X: I love to ski, I think I am the only hip hop artist who loves to ski. I am lot more hood though.
Lat34: Is this skiing more about hanging out at the lodge? Or checking out ski bunnies?
X: No I get up there and go down, a few Black Diamonds here and there. I am alright…
Lat34: Any pro skiers that you like? Do you follow freeskiing or snowboarding at all?
X: Brothers don’t do the shit that will get your neck…cracked! (Laughs) Anything that puts you upside down or gets you this high off the ground- know what I am sayin’? I will go real fast, just not in the air. When you land… you might crack your neck! Know what I am saying? No air. (Laughs)
Lat34: Come with a big crew? Or just some close friends? You have your friend here I see.
X: I don’t know who that is. (Laughs) He is just following me around, no I don’t run with a crew I run with an entourage. I am a 10 year veteran, I learned about the entourage a long time ago.
Lat34: Okay Xzibit so in conclusion we seem to have some no’s that you have established… No fruit in the drink, no skiing in the air, or doing flips, and no crews only entourages- any other no’s?
X: Yeah that is a lot of no’s (laughs). Yeah, I got more… no crack. Crack is whack! And meth equals death.
Lat34: All valid points, thanks Xzbit!
