Lat34's 2007 Jeep Body Glove Surfbout Insider Omar Etcheverry's Live Blog

Day Three - 4/26/07

This morning a sweeping 4-5 foot north swell hit the Surfbout at Lowers Trestles. Not the best direction for this famous Californian surf break, but good waves nonetheless.

Walking down the trail, you could see that the take-off peak was way off its normal spot. It had shifted about 50 yard south of the regular peak that all of us professional surfers are used to, which is typically a north swell.

I ended up watching the last half of the round of 64. The heist seeded round of the contest. This round is one of my favorite rounds to watch in any contest. It has all of the best surfers, from the top named WCT surfers to those hot up and comers that seen to want it more then anyone.

The surfing was sick. One of my East Side homeboys Bud Fretus beat WCT surfer Damien Hobgood in the last heat of the day. Good stuff!

Thanks for tuning in. Until next time here’s to crazy good times!

Day Two - 4/25/07

I woke up at 6:00am this morning, one hour before my alarm even went off.  I was ready to rock and roll.  I grabbed my favorite Surftech surfboard, a large cup of coffee, and jumped in my car.

As I pulled up to the contest site I was psyching.  The waves were a glassy 3 to 4 feet, making for great conditions.  It was on!

Frothing at the mouth, I couldn’t wait to get my practice free surf in as I ran down the trail.  I had a quick warm up surf session and felt good. "Let me at them!" I kept telling myself. "Bring it on!"  Not knowing that once again I was about to experience the worst part of competitive surfing:  Waves don’t always come to you!

I ended up having the worst scoring heat in my 13 years as professional surfer.  I only caught one wave and it was so bad that I kicked out, scoring me a whopping .73 out of 10 on that wave.  That left me with a heat total of .73 out of 20.  Yes, that’s really bad.

After snapping and freaking out for a few hours, I remembered that unfortunately waves don’t always come to you and heats don’t always go you way. Oh well, life goes on! Time to go surf and have some fun!

Day One - 4/24/07

Day one of any contest that I’m in has a tendency to make my emotions go wild. As I pulled up to Lowers today it was no different to the hundreds of contest I’ve surfed in throughout the last 13 years of my career as a pro surfer.

Those oh so familiar feelings of anticipation, excitement, and nervousness flowed through my body like the quick buzz you would get off a double shot of tequila. I grabbed my gear and headed down the 1-mile trail to the contest site.

Walking up I could hear the horns blowing and the commentating as surfers ripped each three-foot wave to their fullest capability. It was a sunny and beautiful day. Bro shaking and slapping 5’s to all my fellow pro friends.

I made my way to the heat sheets to see when I surfed in the contest. I had gotten bumped up a round. Yes! I was super stoked. That meant that I had the day off. I didn’t have to surf in the contest until the next morning. It was time to jump in the water and practice and that’s just what I did!
