Nov 06 2006 / IMBITUBA, Brazil Heat 8: Bede Durbidge (AUS) 13.50 def. Yuri Sodre (BRA) 11.34

The boys first paddled out for their Round Two heat four and a half days ago. Their second shot at it today indicated that Durbidge used the break to amp up (he opened his account with a respectable 7.83 this morning) while Yuri could have used some more time to get back into the swing of things.

Despite posting a couple of mid-range scores the second half of the heat, Sodre never really showed up. He’ll post his seventh 33rd this season. Durbidge, who has finished dead last since in every event since he won in Trestles, was mighty pleased to break the cycle today.

Heat 9: CJ Hobgood (USA) 14.50 def. Adrian Buchan (AUS) 11.00

CJ Hobgood enjoyed a return to form today defeating Adrian Buchan to advance through to round three.

Hobgood, who has had a series of poor results this season, looked in trouble of receiving another 33rd with Buchan holding the lead for the majority.

The former ASP World Champ picked up a bowling lefthander to score a 9.00 and take the win.

In the water now is veteran Toby Martin up against the rookie Shaun Cansdell.

Heat 10: Toby Martin (AUS) 13.07 def. Shaun Cansdell (AUS) 12.73

Toby "The Murderer" Martin has continued his roll today defeating rookie sensation Shaun Cansdell to advance through to round three.

Martin, who recently took out a WQS four-star event in Santa Cruz, came from behind to steal away a commanding lead held by the rookie Cansdell.

Martin continues his run into round three while Cansdell receives a 33rd going into the Hawaiian portion of the season.

Heat 11: Trent Munro (AUS) 12.00 def. David Weare (ZAF) 11.00

Trent Munro held on to a narrow lead over South African rookie David Weare to secure a round two victory.

Both surfers locked in average scores without ever really finding the waves to open up on.

Weare will receive a 33rd and will need a big result at Pipeline while Munro will charge into round three.

In the water now is Fred Patacchia and Pedro Henrique.

Heat 12: Fred Patacchia (HAW) 13.60 def. Pedro Henrique (BRA) 9.43

Hawaiian phenom Fred Patacchia lit up his round two heat blasting passed Pedro Henrique.

Patacchia, who currently sits 24th on the Foster's ASP World Tour, got things started early by securing good scores on some lengthy lefthanders.

Henrique made some priority errors and will now have to obtain a big result in Hawaii if he is to qualify for the Dream Tour in 2007.

In the water now is Luke Stedman and Mikey Picon.

Heat 13: Adriano de Souza (BRA) 0.00 def. Jarrad Howse (AUS) 0.00

Due to an injury sustained while freeurfing during the lay period, Australian Jarrad Howse was forced to withdraw from competition.

Brazilian Adriano de Souza advances via default into round three.

Heat 14: Miky Picon (FRA) 15.67 def. Luke Stedman (AUS) 9.83

Frenchman Miky Picon got off to a blazing start in his round two heat racking up the day's high heat score of a 15.67 out of a possible 20 to defeat Australian Luke Stedman.

Picon decimated the punchy lefthanders blending lengthy floaters and powerful turns to come away with a much needed heat win. Sitting 38th on the Foster's ASP World Tour, the Frenchmen will need a big result here and in Hawaii if he is to re-qualify.

Stedman, who sits 26th on the ratings, will leave Brazil with a 33rd and will need to focus in Hawaii if he wants to get back on the Dream Tour in 2007.

In the water now is Jake Paterson and Roy Powers.

Heat 15: Jake Paterson (AUS) 13.67 def. Roy Powers (HAW) 12.27

Veteran competitor Jake Paterson survived a last-minute charge from rookie Roy Powers to advance into round three.

Although holding a commanding lead for the majority of the heat, Paterson was ratlled following Powers' 7.27 with four minutes to go.

Although a last-second exchange occurred between the surfers, if wasn't enough for Powers to advance.

In the water now is Chris Ward and Paulo Moura.

Heat 16: Chris Ward (USA) 10.00 def. Paulo Moura (BRA) 6.40

Chris Ward scored a much-needed victory over Brazilian Paulo Moura to advance on through to round three.

Ward, who currently sits 29th on the Foster's ASP World Tour, secured two average waves before conditions deteriorated leaving Moura needing a 4.68.

Ward will now be looking to continue his run into round three which will look to start at 7:00 am tomorrow.
