While in Gabon, we took a river cruise to check out the animals roaming wild in the national park. We were lucky to come across this elephant enjoying his lunch along the river.

This adorable little guy was orphaned by poachers. He now lives on an island run by a protection agency and during the day is allowed to roam the forest with his young companion.

Our island host warned me that there is only one female scientist on the island and since the orphans really miss their mother, they are attacted to females. She told me they would rush right at me and tug on me, asking to be held. I got really excited at the sound of that, but she warned that since they are very susceptible to human illnesses it is better if we don't touch them. The urge to pick this little guy up and give him a cuddle was very hard to resist.

Sao Tome was a former Portuguese slave center. We spent a couple nights in an old plantation house that had been renovated and turned into a guest house. It was situated on a hill overlooking a lush valley and
calm bay.

These are two of the types of surf craft that the locals on Sao Tome used (along with Sam George's shortboard in the middle. The raft on the left is paddled from a sitting position with a long piece of bamboo cut lengthwise. The piece of wood on the right is a surfboard cut from the side of a retired fishing canoe.
