SURFER Magazine, the industry-leading surf publication, opened voting for the 2007 Surfer Poll today, a tradition recognized as the most powerful voice in all of surfing. Celebrating its 35th anniversary of the event, SURFER readers—the most informed and dedicated participants in the space—vote for who they think are currently the most influential surfers in the sport. The Top 10 male and Top 5 female finishers are honored each year in September.

While there’s movement within the Top 10 of the Surfer Poll each year, only 13 surfers have been crowned the Men’s Surfer Poll champions in the 35 year history of the event, making it the most prestigious honor in all of surfing to nab—more so than an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Title. Past male winners include: Phil Edwards, Tom Curren, Andy Irons, and Kelly Slater. Female winners include: Joyce Hoffman, Lisa Andersen, Rochelle Ballard and Sofia Mulanovich.

For inspiration when choosing, readers are encouraged to browse www.surferpoll.net, the official website of the 2007 Surfer Poll and Video Awards presented by Suzuki Auto. While there, they can check out the Surfer Poll Archives or the Surfer Poll Winners’ Gallery. They will also be able to cast their votes for 2007 and will have the opportunity to nominate the film they feel is worthy for Video of the Year.

The big night will take place on September 11, 2007, at The Grove of Anaheim. The Surfer Poll and Video Awards Show is best known as the Academy Awards of the action sports world with the biggest movers and shakers in the industry in attendance. “Look for this year’s Surfer Poll to be bigger and better than ever,” says Rick Irons Jr., Publisher of SURFER Magazine, “especially with the 35th Anniversary of the event as we recognize those who have been the icons to our readers over the history of SURFER.”

Fans can have a say in the matter by voting online at www.surferpoll.net or through the mail with the mail-in ballots provided in the July and August issues of SURFER Magazine. Voting ends on August 15, 2007.

The 2007 Surfer Poll and Video Awards presented by Suzuki Auto will air on FUEL TV on October 23 at 9:30 p.m. The 2007 Awards will be covered fully by SURFER Magazine and FUEL TV.
