Sofia: The Documentary Premiere on July 25th

Jul 20 2006 / Los Angeles, CA SOFIA: A DOCUMENTARY TO PREMIERE TUESDAY JULY 25TH 7:30 PM AS PART OF THE 4TH ANNUAL SURF THEATRE FILM FESTIVAL IN HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA

Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California – July 17, 2006 – Award winning film, Sofia: A Documentary, has been selected as the opening night feature film at the 4th Annual Surf Theatre Film Festival kicking off the 2006 US Open of Surfing Tuesday July 25th, 7:30 PM at the Pierside Surf City 6 Theatre, located at 300 P.C.H. in Huntington Beach, California.

Sofia, a 52-minute, 16 mm film in Spanish with English subtitles, chronicles Professional Surfer and Peruvian, Sofia Mulanovich’s journey as she pursues her childhood dream of becoming the World Champion of professional women’s surfing and in the process, becomes a national icon and heroine for a third world country in need of a positive role model.

Sofia was selected to open the January 2006 X Dance Film Festival in Park City, Utah where it won Best Emerging Filmmaker and was nominated for Best Picture, Best Biography, and Best Director. In March 2006 Sofia won the Jury Award at the Delray Beach Film Festival in Florida and recently won the coveted Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking in the documentary category at the elite 2006 Newport Beach Film Festival in California.

“Sofia first competed at the US Open when she was 13 years old, she barely spoke English, and had to surf against Layne Beachley in one of her first heats,” Executive Producer and Sports Agent for Mulanovich, Susan Izzo continued, “to share Sofia (the film) with the US Open crowd means the world to her.”

Bewildered as to why the people of her country thanked Mulanovich in the streets of Peru, Izzo realized that Mulanovich was inspiring her nation to believe that they too could achieve their dreams. At first a very modest Mulanovich was reluctant to the idea of a documentary being made about her, over time Izzo was able to convince the humble Peruana, that her story should be told. Soon, Izzo hired Director Peter Goetz and Director of Photography and Editor Sam Pietsch to begin the filming in September of 2003. What ensued over the next two years of filming was beyond what Izzo or Mulanovich could have ever imagined. They created a tribute to the people of Peru, and anyone who has had a dream, and the courage to follow it.

Sofia Mulanovich will be on hand to participate in a Q&A after the screening as well as an autograph signing. Admission is free, doors open at 7:00 PM at the Pierside Surf City 6 Theatre; the screening will begin at 7:30 PM, with a private after party to follow.
