Aussie Gold: Torah Bright
Jan 27 2007 / Aspen, COCatch up with Australia’s first ever Winter X Snowboard gold medalist
The women’s superpipe competition at Winter X was far from a run away. It came down to the final run before a winner was determined. As current leader Torah Bright watched from the bottom of the pipe, number one qualifier Gretchen Bleiler sketched out on her 900 first hit. Just like that, Torah was the Winter X Superpipe champion.

The first Australian snowboarder to ever win gold at Winter X, Torah threw down not only the most technical run in the women’s competition, but the most solid run of the night. Although it’s not her first big win -- she won the US Open last season -- the X Games is definitely something to write home about. We caught up to Torah to see how it really feels.
Lat34: How did it feel to win Winter X?
TB: It was incredible. When I landed that second run, I had a great second run, and the score came up it was like 94 and I was just like, ooh, it’s on! This is gonna be good. I just felt good, really good.
Lat34: You won US Open last year? How does this compare to that?
TB: They’re both such prestigious events in snowboarding. They’re different events. US Open has been around for years and years and years so me growing up and watching that, and also watching X Games from when it first started. For me to be here and winning it is incredible. It’s a crazy feeling. I’ve definitely hit a lull today. I am just exhausted from last night.
Lat34: You just qualified for slopestyle, on the bubble, were you nervous that you weren’t gonna make it?
TB: No, I wasn’t nervous because I just wanted to come out and have fun, but I almost didn’t get out of bed this morning, I was so exhausted. I just came out and did a few tricks and luckily I qualified, because I didn’t really put a run together. I’m happy.
Lat34: What did you end up doing last night? Did you go out?
TB: No, I didn’t go out and celebrate. I was here on the mountain until 11 doing interviews and then went back to my place and just scavenged around for some food and then went to sleep. I was so exhausted but so excited, that I just wasn’t able to sleep for hours.
Lat34: So did your Grenade Gloves help you grab so solid and win?
TB: Of course. Actually, it was the Roxy Magnatraction. I am a full supporter of the Magnatraction. I’ve only just started riding these boards and I was quite nervous about the change just because change is hard with equipment, and the first time I was on this board it was just a pleasure to ride around the mountain. In the pipe it just edges incredible.
Lat34: What else are you up to this season? Are you filming at all?
TB: Yes, we’ve got the Roxy Snowboard video that we are going to be heading to Japan to film for in a couple weeks. That is exciting. I’ve got a couple more competitions, the Nippon Open, the US Open, Vans, everything!
Lat34: What’s the one thing you’re most exciting about doing this year?
TB: I’m excited to go back to the Nippon Open. I didn’t make it there last year after the Olympics just because I was so exhausted, but I was there the year before and it’s such a fun event. I’m happy to be going back, and I love all the Japanese!
Lat34: I’m sure they love you too!
