Fisher Denies White Superpipe Gold
Jan 30 2007 / Aspen, CO Back-to-Back 900s Gives The Colorado Resident His Second Snowboard SuperPipe Gold at Winter X GamesAspen, Colo. – In his fifth consecutive SuperPipe appearance, 24-year old Steve Fisher threw down back-to-back 900s then a 720 to win the SuperPipe gold in front of the biggest crowd in Winter X Games history, 76,150 to be exact. His winning run denied Shaun White a Winter X Games record- breaking seventh gold medal.
“The pipe was really long. It was almost like doing two runs, so it gave me an opportunity to do more tricks,” said Fisher. “Everything just clicked and I was back on the horse.”

The 2004 SuperPipe competition was the only other year the Breckenridge, Colorado resident made it to the finals when he also brought home the gold. He also recently won the Paul Mitchell Quarteripe Jam in Breckenridge, Colo.
Even with back-to-back 1080s (one frontside, then one cab), 20-year old White, who was going for a record seventh Winter X Games gold, the judges awarded him the silver.
“From when I was fifteen years old and I got two silvers, I said next year I’m coming back to get the gold,” said White who also won the bronze in slopestyle this year. “That’s how I feel again this year so I’m going full bore next year. I finished second place, this is good, this isn’t Talledega Nights,” White said. “And don’t worry. I’ve got a couple more years in me so I think I can get that seventh medal.”
The 2006 superpipe silver medalist, Mason Aguirre did back-to-back 1080s then back-to-back 900s to win the bronze. “My first run was okay, so for my second run I just mellowed out and did what I wanted to do which was land my tens,” said Aguirre. The 19-year-old from Duluth, Minnesota missed the podium in the 2006 Olympics by one spot getting fourth, but came back later that year to win the World SuperPipe Championships in Park City, Utah.
All three podium finishers commented on the crowd at the bottom of this year’s Winter X Games SuperPipe competition. “The crowd was definitely the most amped I’ve seen in the last five years,” said Aguirre. “Everybody is just enjoying watching each other and feeding off each others energy.”
Steve Fisher: back to back 900’s and cab 720. I’m feeling really good, very nice, very excite—like Borat. The pipe was really long, it was almost like doing two runs. It gave me an opportunity to do more. I’m having tons of emotions. Everything just clicked and I was back on the horse. I was stoked, the crowd here was good. Everybody is so excited about the event.
Shaun White: back to back 1080’s on second run, frontside 1080 then cab 1080. huge amplitude to get a 91. its funny, I always set my goals at the x games. from when I was fifteen and I got two silvers I said next year I’m coming back to get the gold. That’s how I feel again this year so I’m going full bore next year. I finished second place, this is good, this isn’t Talledega Nights. Don’t worry, I’ve got a couple more years in me. I think I can get that [re. record seven medals]. The crowds were insane. Its so much more than a competition this year.
Mason Aguirre: back to back 1080’s, then back to back 900’s (for a 90.66). it definitely seems like Shaun is the focus to see if he can twelve-peat of whatever. But he’s just out there like us having fun. He’s obviously a great snowboarder but you can’t win them all. My first run was okay so for my second run I just mellowed out and did what I wanted to do which was land back to back tens. The crowd was definitely the most amped I’ve seen in the last five years. It’s a lot more positive vibe than the Olympics. Just everybody enjoying watching each other and feeding off each other.
