“You come in to competitions trying to get gold, but two is twice as good,” said Wiig.
After winning both silver and bronze in past Winter X Games Slopestyle competitions, 25-year old Wiig wasn’t sure he was going to compete in the Best Trick Showdown. “I woke up just an hour and a half before practice and decided to go, so it hasn’t really sunk in yet, but it’s starting to.” Wiig came to Winter X Games 11 shortly after winning the Honda Session at Vail Slopestyle competition.
In his fifth Winter X Games appearance, 24-year old Travis Rice threw a frontside double cork 1080 with a melon grab to land the silver. The last person to beat Shaun White in the slopestyle competition in 2002, the Jackson Hole, Wyoming native tried to repeat his first run trick on the second run, but was unable to land it again.
“I knew that with Antti and the flying Viking over here that I had to throw my best trick, so that’s what I tried to do,” said Rice. “I was stoked just to be in the competition. It’s a good event and I can’t wait to see what they have for us next year.”
Finnish rider, Antti Autti landed a 1080 tail grab in the finals to round out the podium with the bronze. The 21-year old 2005 Winter X SuperPipe champion also landed a method air, following fellow boarder Danny Davis who ended up falling on his attempt.
“I’ve been riding big kickers a lot so getting the bronze at the X Games is awesome,” said Autti. “I’ve been super tired all week and going into the contest, but the jump was really good so I woke up in the middle of the contest and just went for it.”
