Shaun White Dominates At Snowboard Superpipe Final Winter X 12

Jan 28 2008 / Aspen, CO
A blanket of snow fell on Buttermilk Mountain as a world-class athlete, Shaun White, put on a world-class display tonight at the Snowboard SuperPipe Men’s Final to close out ESPN Winter X Games 12.

“It feels medieval,” White said. “It feels so great, man.”

Leading the field going into his final run, but facing the prospect of another jaw-dropping run by the number one qualifier, Japanese shredding phenom Ryo Aono, White laid down a SuperPipe display that earned him a 96.66, and the gold.

White’s run included a frontside big air, front- and backside 1080s, and – to top it off – a frontside 1260 at the bottom of the pipe.

“Everything was awesome tonight,” White said. “The best part of X Games is the crowd. Man, you’re getting ready to take your run and you hear everybody cheering at the bottom.”

White recently announced a ten-year partnership deal with Burton Snowboards, the longest agreement in the sport of snowboarding.

Elsewhere tonight, Levi LaVallee and Sarah Burke were each named Jeep Athlete of the Games for their exceptional performances at Winter X Games 12.

Snowmobile racer LaVallee had two gold medals this year, in the debut of Speed & Style and tonight’s Snowmobile Freestyle event. Burke repeated at the Skiing SuperPipe Women’s event Friday night, taking home her second gold medal in two years.

LaVallee and Burke will each receive a 2008 New All Jeep Liberty.

Total attendance for Winter X Games 12 was 72,500 over the four days.
