In the first NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup event ever held in New Zealand, ladies' 2007 world champion and 2006/07 FIS World Cup winner Manuela Laura Pesko of Switzerland turned in a nearly flawless second run to edge defending FIS World Cup snowboard cross champion Lindsey Jacobellis. Jacobellis's teammate Clair Bidez, the reigning Junior Worlds half-pipe gold medalist, completed Saturday's podium in 3rd place and secured her first FIS World Cup top three result.

Manuela Laura Pesko was all smiles after a perfect kick-off for the season: “I wasn't really convinced after my first run so I decided to focus more on having fun riding a half-pipe. That worked out well and I was riding like I normally do. I'm very pleased with the result especially because you never know where you stand in the beginning of a new season.”

"My better run was my first," Jacobellis said. "I was able to put my tricks together. It was awesome weather - the best we've had down here and that makes it so much easier to see everything. The winds didn't pickup until the last run. It's always nice to start the season with a podium."

Ryoh Aono of Japan, the defending FIS World Cup title holder in the men's half-pipe, won the men's contest with a great first run. Iouri Podladtchikov, the Russian-Swiss double citizen now starting for Switzerland, finished second followed by his teammate Rolf Feldmann.

Aono commented: “I didn't expect anything special from this World Cup opener – especially since it was pretty windy out there. But it my hard preparations for the new season already paid off. I will try to defend my World Cup title.”

The weather, which had been problematic through much of the week at Cardrona, located between Wanaka and Queenstown, cleared in time for good conditions.

The NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup schedule resumes Sept. 26-29 in El Colorado, Chile, with a pair of SBX competitions for men and ladies. The next half-pipe FIS World Cup is scheduled for Nov. 2 in Saas Fee, Switzerland.
