BEO Athlete Interview: Mason Aguirre and Scotty Lago

Feb 16 2007 / LAAX, Switzerland

Lat34.com caught up with Scotty Lago, currently in second place on the TTR ranking list,  and fellow American ripper Mason Aguirre at the mountain restaurant in Laax just moments after the men's Slopestyle was officially cancelled.

Lat34.com: How are you guys doing?
SL: Yeah all good. Just heard the news which is a shame but that's what happens sometimes.
MA: Yeah that sucks, but we're OK. What can you do? It's just too windy and the visibility isn't there to run the comp.

Lat34.com: So what's your plan?
SL: We're gonna head down the hill I think?
MA: Yeah I think we're gonna go after we talk to you. Scotty Lago and Mason EOP 300x200

Lat34.com: Is it official now? Is the comp totally cancelled?
MA: Yeah. The guy just got up and told everyone in the restaurant, but it was kind of obvious from this morning that the weather wasn't going to clear. The clouds were getting worse and the wind was coming in, so they had to bail it.

Lat34.com: So what happens with the results now? And the prize money? Have they told you yet?
SL: I think they're splitting it with the people who were in the final. Like 50 riders or something so someone just said it works out at $350 per rider I think.
MA: Really? Well that's cool. I didn't know that.
SL: Yeah they just said that.

Lat34.com: What's your plan now then? Are you hanging around for the next few days?
SL: No we've both got to leave town.
MA: We'll be here tonight for the party though.
SL: Oh yeah. I mean tonight's going to be the big one (Norwegian rider Mikkel Bang joins in by putting a cut out picture of a bikini model as we're getting shots of Mason and Scotty together). Thanks. She's pretty hot.
MA: Yeah we'll party tonight and I think after the last two days most of the riders here are ready to go out. It should be fun.
SL: Then we've got to head to the X Games like tomorrow night or Wednesday morning or something.

Lat34.com: So you're not staying for the pipe finals on Saturday?
SL: No. It sucks we can't do both, but we've got to head out as soon as.
MA: Yeah, I really want to stay too.

Lat34.com: Are you there to chase the TTR Ranking points?
SL: I'm not super sure. I don't know how the Slopestyle affects that, but I guess we'll find out at the rider's meeting tonight.
MA: You're like in second place aren't you?
SL: Yup.
MA: I'm pretty low down on that list right now because I haven't done the six star events, but I'm gonna change that over the next few weeks I hope. Either way, the X Games is gonna be good, so although it's a shame to leave here and not get the points or the results, what can you do? That's just how the season shapes up sometimes.

Lat34.com: OK well have fun tonight and good luck at the X Games.
SL: Thanks man.
MA: Yeah, appreciate that. Let's hope the rest of the comp goes well.
