The Worlds of Art, Music, Film, Surfing and Skateboarding Converge in an Expression of Cultural Savoire-Faire
The Happening was a two-part event on April 13th featuring a select group of artists and photographers exhibiting work based in contemporary surf and skate cultures. The event was followed by musical performances by skateboarder Matt Costa, Money Mark, and more.
In addition, The Happening helped raise money and awareness for a group of non-profit organizations. A portion of the proceeds benefited RE*Generation Gallery, Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, National Transplant Assistance Fund and SurfAid International.
The Happening took place in two venues in Chelsea, New York City. The affair kicked-off at the Milk Gallery, with an art exhibition. Featured artists and photographers included Michael Halsband, Thomas Campbell, Dylan Griffan, David Carson, Andy Davis, Wolfgang Bloch, Jeff Canham, David Lloyd, Greg LaMarche, Geoff McFetridge, Julie Goldstein, Alex Kopps, Rob Ryan, Herbie Fletcher, Jamie Brisick, Joe Curren and more. Barefoot Wine and Pabst Blue Ribbon were consumed as the movers and shakers admired the art and music.

At about 8:30, the event moved from Milk Studios to the fabulously grand Hiro Ballroom, at the base of the Maritime Hotel one block from Milk Gallery. Wristbanded attendees queued up to hear the musical performances by Matt Costa, Money Mark, Mason Jennings, and Emily Haines of Metric. In addition, film shorts by the Malloys, The Gothic Dolphins, and Patrick Trefz were projected onto the two-story film screen directly behind the stage. Four films were screened in conjunction with the music culminating in the East Coast Premiere of "1st & Hope", a look at the world of skating through the eyes of the Malloy brothers and Brian Lotti.
Fans packed the ballroom and cheered as "1st & Hope" was shown and the sounds of the Beck soundtrack filled the room. Immediately following the film "1st & Hope" t-shirts were distributed to the excited crowd.
The party continued into the wee hours of the cold, spring New York City morning. A good time was had by all.
