Sheckler Repeats as Dew Cup Champ

Oct 14 2006 / Orlando, FL In a thrilling down-to-the wire jam session, Jereme Rogers edged out his friend Ryan Sheckler for a win at tonight’s PlayStation Pro Skate Park Finals, but it wasn’t enough for the overall prize in the race for the Dew Cup Sheckler won three of the five events on the 2006 Dew Tour, finishing with a total of 430 points. Even with tonight’s win, Rogers only reached 401 in the overall contest.

The two are close friends, but have been going head-to-head on the Park course all year.

“I’m just glad to have a successful year,” said Sheckler, remarking on Rogers’ win. “You couldn’t ask for more. He worked hard for it, and definitely deserves it.”

Sheckler was in 1st place after two rounds of individual runs, with a winning Round 1 run featuring a huge kickflip transfer over a hip and tons of technical flip tricks including a backside 180 kickflip. By the time he stomped Caballaerial to boardslide at the end of his run, he’d cemented his lead.

The top five skaters from the individual runs progressed to a jam format. That left out several great skaters, including newcomer David Loy, the amateur skater who won his spot in Orlando by winning the Dew Tour’s amateur Free Flow contest.

Rogers – known for his technical rail skills – closed the gap between 1st and 2nd place in the first portion of the jam session, despite a round of impressive Sheckler tricks including a huge kickflip to flat that he’d missed in the individual rounds and a backflip to the deck that he’d been working on all summer at Woodward.

Another highlight of the crowded, crazy jam session: Chad Bartie launching a massive transfer air right over Rogers’ head in the midst of the mayhem.

Paul Rodriguez also rocked the jam format, climbing to 3rd place. He was followed by Berard in 4th and Rodolfo Ramos in 5th.

“It’s rad skating with Jereme and Paul, and we got 1, 2, 3,” said Sheckler. The three skaters are friends and have been pushing and challenging each other for years.

Tonight’s PlayStation Pro nets Rogers $15,000. He also won the Right Guard Open in Denver, and will take home some bonus cash for placing in the top ten overall.

Sheckler, who also won the 2005 overall championships, will take home $75,000 and the Dew Cup in tomorrow’s awards ceremony. He’ll join BMX Vert champ Jamie Bestwick and Skate Vert champ Bucky Lasek – also repeat champions – as one of three undisputed kings of action sports circa 2006.
