'Life of Ryan' Episode Nine - Season Two
Mar 12 2008 / Los Angeles, CA

He visits his agent Steve but doesn't bring up Kayla (Steve's made clear his views on girlfriends). Instead, he wants to know about his birthday plans -- after all, he's turning 18. Perhaps Vegas (no gambling officially yet, though)? And what about that house he wants to buy? Steve shrugs off the birthday (what's so special about 18?) and says he's not going to go house-hunting with Ryan. Even though no birthday plans are spilled, Ryan leaves knowing something will happen.
Meanwhile, back on the Kayla front, it's time for her to meet dad. Ryan, Kayla and Randy all have lunch and Kayla talks about her plans after graduation. Turns out she wants to take a year off and travel. Ryan lets a thought slip that he's feeling a bit stressed and in a funk and Randy says that could be a problem. But Ryan decides he doesn't want to talk any more about it.

Later Ryan and his crew (Mitch, Casey and Tony) play in the backyard with some of Kane's toys (like the Razor) but soon the group relaxes and Ryan admits that he's having some issues with his relationship with Kayla. Basically he says that Kayla is taking the relationship a lot more serious than he is and it's not fair to her. It's clear he has a lot of things going on and dealing with a girlfriend may be just a little too much to handle.
It's right before his birthday and Ryan gets picked up by Steve for a photo shoot at Oakley -- or so he thinks. In fact, what's happening instead is a surprise birthday party for Ryan at the sunglass maker's headquarters. Everyone is there -- his family, his friends, his friend's friends. Hosting the event is Lil Jon and also performing is Three 6 Mafia. It's a sick party.
But one thing that seems to happen is right after he says hi to Kayla is that he doesn't talk to her at all again as he goes out and hangs with all his friends including ex-flame Cambria. So while Ryan has a blast with everyone, an apparently unhappy Kayla appears to leave early.
The next morning Ryan meets up with Mitch, Tony and Casey and the conversation quickly goes from the party to Kayla. From what Mitch and Casey say, Kayla was asking "Where's Ryan?" all night and Ryan doesn't like that.
"I'm an independent person," he tells them. "I can do whatever I want to do."
Back home, he tells maid/housekeeper/assistant Angelique about his dilemma and gets some advice on how to deal with Kayla. Then he goes downstairs and sees his mom, who gives Kayla a lot of credit for helping with the surprise party. That gets Ryan feeling even more torn up about it.
He visits Mitch and tells him that he's made a decision: he's going to break up with her.
Finally the moment comes. He takes Kayla to a nice spot overlooking the beach and starts talking with her. Immediately the emotion he's feeling comes through... His voice starts to crack and he tells her that he can't be the boyfriend she needs right now.
Both appear to shed some tears but in the end it's all good. Ryan is single again.

Random Notes from Episode Nine - Season Two
- Well, the inevitable break-up has happened. As soon as they got together it wasn't really a matter of if it would work -- just of how long it would last. So I guess the interview on "Ellen" was accurate. That said, no matter how he was talking with his buddies when it came down to the actual break-up, it was very authentic and completely honest. Good for him and good luck to her finding that special someone who's not a huge skateboarding star with a MTV reality show.
- Minimal Taylor in this episode. That's not necessarily good or bad, but it was strange because she is Kayla's friend and was the go-to-gal when Ryan was thinking of going out with her. So where was she when he needed a woman's opinion on the relationship? And who can he turn to? I guess Angelique...
- And speaking of Angelique? Who's she? Did MTV just not get her permission to film her until now or have I missed her? And I don't usually see assistants doing laundry. Maids, maybe. Or housekeepers.
- Even with Lil Jon, Three 6 Mafia and Jereme Rogers on site, I was still a little disappointed with the star power at his party. But I guess it's a good thing that there were a ton of family and friends. That definitely made it feel genuine.
- Ryan's blog entry on MTV.com is more helpful than usual this week since he really explains how surprising the party was and more about the break up. So you should check it out, too.
- There was no home movie footage in this episode -- a blessed event to be sure.
- Next week: could it be true? Dad breaks up with Christi? Looks like the two single guys are going off to Vegas. Tony isn't coming (I think his girlfriend is still in the picture) and neither is Caselor (See, Casey + Taylor = Caselor. Think it'll stick?). And Mitch? I think he's single. But maybe this will be a father/son thing...
See you all next week.
