It seems like only yesterday that we were watching Ryan Sheckler and his friends hanging out on the beach in San Clemente, watching the sun set and thinking about the future... Well, the future is here with "Life of Ryan" season two, which premiered Tuesday (January 8) at 10 p.m. Yes, it was hard missing "The Hills," which was its lead-in back in season one when it aired on Mondays, but if I keep the TV on after it's over I get to see "Rob & Big." So that's a good trade-off, right?

Anyway, when the show picks up, there's a lot happening. First off, Ryan's brother Shane has gone ahead and shaved his head and gone about wearing Black Flag shirts. It was hard to even recognize him in the opening scenes. Oh yeah, and his mom is getting being taken to court by his dad. What? What's that about?

Through flashbacks we find out that Gretchen and Randy are having some issues about the divorce settlement, and it apparently has to do with how Randy felt he got treated after supporting Gretchen for all the years she was helping Ryan establish his career. Both parents are pretty coy about what is actually happening, and Ryan seems tired of being in the middle of it and tells his mother as much when they are in Orlando for the final Dew Tour stop. And in a flashback, his dad is a bit condescending about telling the 17-year-old multi-millionaire that this is a "adult matter." Right. No offense, Randy, you aren't much of an adult.

Anyway, as this drama about reliving the divorce is going on, Gretchen asks Ryan to reconsider buying the house that was teased as the finale of last season. Say it ain't so! The party house of my mind featuring scantily-clad jacuzzi parties and lots of drunken fights is crumbling down as a future of Ryan hanging with his brothers and mother in a single house and talking about things like family and feelings comes back into focus.

In Orlando, Ryan hangs with Casey and Mitch (the newest member of his crew, apparently. Not sure of his job title yet and he's not in the credits. I'll call him "Guy who gets Ryan's bottled water") before Tony and Taylor jet in, making Ryan's entourage (which includes his family, agent and friends) complete. I would love to see that hotel bill.

Ryan competes in the event in front of what appears to be stands overflowing with fans of his. The PlayStation Pro (which is never actually named but that's what it's called, not Dew Tour Orlando) also marks the season finale of the tour and Ryan is awarded the Dew Cup in a big ceremony.

When it's all over, he reflects on his life, his future and everything in between as he hangs in the hotel lobby with his mom. He lets her know that as long as he isn't dragged into their divorce re-hash, he will stay at home. She agrees.

Damn.

Random Notes from Episode One - Season Two

- Ryan's new haircut from the party promo during last season's season finale was back. In promo pics for the show he has a buzz cut but no sign of that in any preview of the upcoming season.
- During a particularly crazy autograph session in Orlando, Ryan says: "The more I win, the more popular I become?" Actually, Ryan, I think a little show on MTV may have something to do with your family being asked for autographs and your throngs of female fans. Just thinking that might have something to do with it.
- Ryan plays up that a poor performance at the Orlando Dew Tour stop would be "disasterous" to his chances for winning the Dew Cup. Not exactly -- he clinched it in Salt Lake City. And if you blink, you might miss the fact that he came in second in Orlando.
- Orlando took place in October and the last episode of season one took place in about August with the Porland stop of the Dew Tour. So September is not accounted for, meaning that it was probably already decided he wasn't moving out...
- Are Casey and Taylor actually still together? If they are, I haven't ever seen two people less in love... I think I counted one scene with the two of them side by side. In a couple of the previews they appear to be sitting next to another so I guess that's what counts for love these days.
- After the show there were promos for the upcoming season and among the interesting tidbits were a love interest, an international trip, more family drama, Shane going to a contest and Ryan actually being filmed talking to another skateboarder. That's a first, folks. (no, Tony Hawk and Bam Margera don't count)
- Total anal moment for TiVo fans -- isn't the bedroom featured in the door-slam at the end of the previews the same bedroom in Orlando where Ryan is sacked out at the end of the episode? I think it is. That means nothing but the fact that I am waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too observant.
- R.I.P. Old Home Movie Clips of Ryan as a child. We'll miss you. Not.

See you all next week when episode two of the second season hits the airwaves.
