'Life of Ryan' Episode 11 - Season Two
Mar 26 2008 / Los Angeles, CA

Despite the bad news, Ryan is on a house hunt. He knows that he's going to buy one and every place he looks at is either pulled off the market or people reject his offers. He has lunch with Casey and Mitch and gives them an update then talks with Casey about moving in. Casey seems a little underwhelmed about the cost (for his rent) and the change it will bring.
Ryan checks in with his dad and Randy advises him to be careful about how he treats the roommate situation. Ryan's not sure what it will be like to live with someone other than family and Randy says it will all change and just make sure he has a lease in place with clear expectations -- and to do it upfront.

Next Ryan stops by Taylor's house. She's busy with homework and Ryan seems pleased he's done with school. But after peppering her about Casey's reliability as a roomie he's hit with a bombshell: She and Casey broke up. A few days ago.
"I don't even know how to respond to that," he says.
Taylor assures him that she's single and that it just was hard with her still in school and Casey not there. Taylor wants them all to remain friends and so does Ryan, but he's worried about Casey not filling him in about the breakup.
He tracks down Casey at the skatepark and tells him he heard about the breakup. Casey says news travels fast (I guess he thought that since he didn't spread it) but basically shuts Ryan out saying he doesn't want to talk about it. Instead he keeps on skating.
Next Ryan goes to Tony's and breaks the news to him. Tony is just as shocked as Ryan was -- they were together almost two years and it's hard to imagine the two not together. The whole thing gives Ryan second thoughts because Ryan can't let go of Casey not sharing with him.
Later, back home, he catches up with Mom-Manager Gretchen who gives him her two cents about the roommate situation. She obviously cares for Casey, but she reminds Ryan about how the two have sometimes clashed. We are treated to a flashback with an angry Ryan talking to Casey on the phone about borrowing his truck and basically leaving no gas. Then apparently Ryan ran out of gas and had to get picked up by Mom. Oops.
But even so, Gretchen says, Casey probably needs his support in this difficult time.
Ryan's internal struggle continues. He goes to Mitch and gets his opinion. Mitch reminds him that it seems like Casey was into the relationship much more than she was. And Ryan remembers a talk he had with his mom where she said basically that Casey was smothering Taylor. Yeah, that could do it. Ryan decides to try and talk with Casey again.
He finds him on the beach, staring at the waves, apparently lost in thought. Maybe it's the locale, or maybe Casey has just softened, but he actually opens up a bit. Despite his saying it's all good, his expressions say otherwise, but the fact that he's talking about it is a positive step. Ryan urges him to have fun and Casey says he has. But Ryan knows some things are still being unsaid.
Since there will be some money involved, Ryan meets up with his money man Steve at a power lunch at the Mall. Steve thinks he should just go for it on his own, but suggests that if Ryan is set on Casey moving in that they should give him some responsibility. Put him charge of the taking care of the house, especially when Ryan is out of town. Ryan loves the idea and heads over to Casey's place to suggest it.
Casey seems to dig the idea -- he didn't want to work for Ryan, necessarily, but this is a good alternative and would help cover his rent.
It looks like things may end up working out in the end -- at least for them being roomies.

Random Notes from Episode 11 - Season Two
- So Caselor ends with a whimper. No tears. No yelling. Yet. Stay tuned.
- It's tough when the previews are more interesting than the current episode. Seriously, last week's previews were enough to fill me in on this week's one-note storyline and I want to get to what I see in the previews for next week.
- I can't believe I am saying this but maybe I miss the home movies? Nah, forget it.
- I do find it interesting that the cameras have been following Ryan enough to start using some of the (no doubt) hundred of hours of unused footage for flashbacks. Namely this week's clip of Ryan tearing into Casey via the phone about his truck and the Gretchen remarks about Casey smothering Ryan.
- I'm not sure why Mitch and Tony are completely out as roomie possibilities. Maybe they aren't interested, but from the perspective of what would be most fun? No question: Tony "I don't believe in girlfriends" Panici. Even his name is cooler.
- Despite the previews for next week (won't outright spoil it for everyone) I am officially taking odds that Ryan and Taylor will get together within 13 episodes. 3-1.
- This was one of those rare episodes with no trace of Shane or Kane. Not even in the background when Ryan was at home... But I guess once he moves out, it'll happen more and more often.
- Though there is an obvious tie-in, I watched all the commercials (painfully) closely and I did not see Ryan's new Proactive commercial. It's the latest and greatest part of Sheckler's dynasty and if you have not seen it yet, you should see it now.
- One last thought: I think Ryan makes enough that he should never, ever have to eat at a mall again. Yes, you anal viewers may note that he apparently was eating at the California Pizza Kitchen but for whatever reason he and Steve ended up eating in the food court. Last (true) episode he ate at the 9 steakhouse in Vegas: That's what I'm talking about.
See you all next week.
