Dyrdek Does DIY
Nov 07 2006 / Los Angeles, CAWeary from battling security guards and seeing the best spots screwed up by Skate-Stopper bolts and other anti-skateboarding measures, Rob Dyrdek decided to take matters into his own hands to build a street skater’s paradise complete with ledges, stair sets, and other obstacles modeled on some of his favorite spots.
“I’m out here on the streets, driving around for hours to find a perfect spot to skate for a few minutes before I get kicked out, and at the same time I’m seeing all of my old favorite spots getting shut down,” says Dyrdek. “It was making me sick, so I had to do something about it.”
The first Rob Dyrdek–DC Shoes Skate Plaza Foundation project opened last year in Dyrdek’s hometown of Kettering, Ohio, followed by another in Shreveport, Louisiana in March of 2006. Huge contests, epic sessions, and countless hours of video footage have already gone down at each park, and there’s more to come.
Sound like a good idea? The Rob Dyrdek–DC Shoes Skate Plaza Foundation sells its documentary DVD Groundbreaking for $3.95 as a tool to help you convince your local community – and powers that be – that a Skate Plaza is exactly what street skaters and local property owners need. The Skate Plaza Foundation is busy working to provide resources to new projects around the world, and public relations manager Cristina Kown says several new Skate Plazas are under way in some cities that might surprise you.
“I’m not even comfortable talking about it yet, because we don’t want to jinx anything,” says Kown. “Let’s just say that, if everything works out with one of these projects in particular, it’s going to be huge.”
