Lasek Repeats as Dew Tour Champ
Oct 14 2006 / Orlando, FL Coming into today’s Finals, Bucky Lasek’s 1st place standing was in solid shape for the overall Dew Tour contest: Only a win by Sandro Dias could have displaced him.Dias came in strong, with a huge 540, an indy alley-oop 540, another 540 over the channel, and a 360 varial. The announcers were calling him “the Brazilian Pitbull” as he charged around every inch of the ramp, but he fell on a flip trick before the buzzer. After a Lasek fall in Round 1 left him in a very vulnerable 7th place position, a big Dias win was starting to look like a possibility.
Tas Pappas put together one of the best runs of his career in Round 1 – including a kickflip backside 360 to fakie and a huge 720 – and was the leader until Lasek’s last run. Another Dias fall in Round 2 sealed the deal for Lasek in the overall Dew Tour competition, giving him the opportunity, mid-contest to say some famous words.

“My family’s here right now. I was going to surprise them, but… we are going to Disney World!”
Shortly after, he claimed the prize for the PlayStation Pro contest as well: his second win on the tour after a victory at the Toyota Challenge in San Jose last month. His winning run tonight started off with a huge backside ollie to tailslide over the channel, a frontside rodeo 540, a backside indy 360, his signature heelflip frontisde gay twist, and a slick disaster lipslide to revert. A Round 2 score of 92.00 bumped Pappas down to 2nd and Pierre-Luc Gagnon to 3rd.
Andy Macdonald and Anthony Furlong also broke out great runs in the Finals, and both Brazilians – Dias and Bob Burnquist – made 900 attempts in their runs to try to redeem their falls.
Dias ended up way down in 10th place, but held his 2nd place position in the overall standings.
“It’s always a battle,” said Lasek, acknowledging the night’s challenges. “These guys are great. Sandro’s awesome. I’ll pat myself on the back.”
