Reminder: Deathbowl To Downtown
Published: 1:12 a.m. PT by Mike
We've talked about this movie on the site before but I haven't so bear with me.
There are a few cities in the world that personify a specific skate culture and the skaters themselves. For example you have the steep, terrifying hills of San Francisco along with the business parks, which are characterized by the cracking sound of wheels rolling on a brick surface. Or you have the amazing architectural, Goya influenced, landscape unintended for skateboarding in Barcelona. Then of course there is New York City where not just skateboarding, but also where a number of subcultures have spawned. This is the objective of the new documentary ‘Deathbowl to Downtown’.
This film examines the evolution of skateboarding and where it is today, specifically in NYC. You have the influx of pools and parks popping up everywhere in the 70’s, half pipe and ramp skating of the 80’s, and the more accessible street skate style of the 1990’s seen from a New York City perspective.
Check out the ‘Deathbowl to Downtown’ website for more info on this documentary. Personally I love these kinds of films because it says a lot about skateboarding and it’s influence on cultures around the world. There have been similar docs on other obscure places like the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. I’d love to see one about skate culture in my favorite countries: Antarctica, North Korea, and The Vatican. So if you’re a documentarian and you have access to one of these countries, hit me up.

B.Y.O.B.T???
Published: 12:51 a.m. PT by Mike
Active Ride Shop along with the Simi Valley Skatelab Park are teaming up this Saturday for the B.Y.O.B.T contest. If you don’t know what B.Y.O.B.T stands for, then that’s too bad. You will show up to the event looking foolish, so you better find out. If you show up with your Bachelor’s of Theology degree, people will call you a poindexter.
But I won’t leave you completely hanging; I’ll give you some hints.
1. There are three challenges on three separate obstacles.
2. You will need your skateboard for these challenges.
3. Creativity is key in order to win.
Any guesses? Fine I'll just tell you so you don’t show up with your degree in Theology. It means ‘Best Trick’. Since you won’t be showing up like a dork, you owe me one! Check out the flyer below if you would like to partake or attend.

Forget Mexico, I'm Going Snowboarding!
Published: 5:33 p.m. PT by Mike
I’ve said before and I’ll say it again, “Dang yo, I wish I were into snow”. I think the picture below single handedly sold me on celebrating Spring Break up at Bear Mountain. I mean what kind of juxtaposition is that? Girls dressed like that surrounded by snow? Do they snowboard like that? Because imagine what they would look like after they eat crap. It would be worth it to go up to Bear Mountain just to witness such a thing.
Anyway, Southern California is having an incredible snowboard season with unexplainable snowfall. Actually I think global warming is responsible for it but let’s make the best of what is given to us.
“We’re having one of the best winters we’ve seen in a long time – and that means our Spring season will be better than ever,” said Chris Riddle, Marketing Director at Big Bear Mountain Resorts. “Conditions out on the slopes are perfect right now and the season is far from over. We’ve had enough snowfall and made enough snow this season to stay open well into April. We invite everyone to come up for Spring Break this year and experience wide open runs, beautiful weather and excellent coverage which make for some really great skiing and snowboarding.”
Check out these key dates for special events going on up at the mountain, and hopefully girls in bikinis will be present at all of them, or else I’ll be asking for a refund.

Get Your Piece of Shaun White on Ebay!
Published: 12:31 a.m. PT by Mike
Here’s your chance to own a piece of Shaun White, literally! I’m sure with his helmet up on the action sports stars Ebay charity auction, you would also win some of his microscopic dead skin cells embedded within it’s protective layering. That’s kind of gross but anyway, there are up to 45 one a kind items for the Wings for Life Charity Auction, which will take place from March 13-30.
Buyers can get all sorts of cool items on there; A signed skateboard from the stud with all teenage problems, Ryan Sheckler. As described above, Shaun White’s 2008 X Games helmet will also be up for auction. You can even win, if you’re lucky enough, Travis Pastrana’s Formula 1 racecar jersey. Signed!! And imagine, all auctions start at only 2 dollars, so you would be a fool to not try to win these.
All proceeds from these auctions will go towards the Wings for Life Charity so by bidding, you would contribute to a good cause.
For all the details visit the Wings for Life Charity Ebay website.
From Online To Print
Published: 12:11 a.m. PT by Mike
Online environmentally concious surf magazine “Drift” and drifted away from the online market and has taken on the print world with their bi-monthly publication. Did you notice my attempt at cheap humor in that last sentence? I know. I’m good. Anyway, Drift Magazine is made from recycled paper, sourced from forests approved by the Forestry Stewardship Council. They also use low VOC vegetable inks. Their studio power is from Ecotricity and we use Biopower V100 waste oil to deliver the magazine to the surf shops.

More Sheckler Updates
Published: 2:00 a.m. PT by Greg
We told you about the Ryan Sheckler autograph session this last weekend but if you missed out on that there will be two more PacSun signing next weekend in Brea and Orange. On Friday he'll be at Brea Mall from 4-6 p.m. while on Saturday he'll be at The Block in Orange from 1-3 p.m. Check it out if you dare.
Also, we were checking out the Oh-Gravity Sheckler Fansite and they have some pics of Sheckler apparently getting a concussion during the Slaughter at the Opera in Sydney. Be sure to check it out.
Shaun White's Japanese Adventure
Published: 1:22 a.m. PT by Greg
You probably already know about Shaun White's big win at the World Superpipe Championships last weekend, but did you know where he was before that? Turns out he was in Japan shooting with Red Bull and Snowboarder Mag (but apparently not there to take part in the Nippon Open). Also along for the ride were Heikki Sorsa, Pat Moore, Zach Leach.
If you didn't know that well you're in luck -- there's actually a pretty good recap of the trip on Shaun's flashy official site and a bunch of photos on Red Bull's Snowboarding site.
I've picked out a few nice shots below to check out.

Es Road Trip Through Arizona
Published: 12:49 a.m. PT by Mike
The Es team took an Arizona skate park road trip this past weekend and documented the trip. Join team riders Justin Elridge, Danny Garcia, Mike Barker, Kelly Hart, Mike Anderson, Austin Gillete, and Kevin Terpening as they cross the beautiful state of Arizona. Actually, Arizona is pretty damn hot; I don’t know how you can skate in the daytime there. I remember it being 110 degrees in the shade while I was passing through.

Beez I & II
Published: 12:29 a.m. PT by Mike
<
If director Michel Gondry, (‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, ‘Be Kind, Rewind’) were to do direct a skate video, I think this is what it would look like. ‘Beez’ I-II is a stylistically, avant-garde, radical new video that has pushed the limits of skateboarding like never before. Tricks that most people would never even have thought of, stunts through the use of visual effect would probably inspire Michel Gondry.
Check out the Beez website and check out the trailer for their video, which includes a good number of dope skaters and on top of buying the movies, all proceeds will be donated to charity.

Snowboard TV:Episode 2
Published: 12:01 a.m. PT by Mike
Man sometimes I really wish I could be a professional snowboarder. Then I realize I hate snow and I regret making that statement. But then I’ll see videos like Episode 2 of SBTV and think, “Dang I don’t care if I hate snow. I think snowboarding is right up my alley.” All they do is travel, snowboard, and party with hot chicks. Hot chicks that can’t dance, even better!
Check out this party infested episode, which takes place in Park City Utah. Scotty the Body gets the hard task of interviewing the ladies of The Queens Cup, an all girls competition on their opening rail jam and checks out the action after hours. And trust me, there’s a lot booty shaking.

USA Today Loves Tony Hawk
Published: 1:01 a.m. PT by Greg
In case you haven't seen enough of Tony Hawk in the past decade, USA Today has seen fit to dedicate a huge chunk of space to show middle America just how big he is. Why now? Maybe it's the fact that he's going to be on another TV show next week ("Oprah's Big Give" if you're interested). Or maybe it's because this summer's Boom Boom HuckJam should be announcing dates soon. Or maybe it's because Electronic Arts' EA Skate knocked the bejesus out of Hawk's latest video game installment, Proving Ground. Well, maybe not that last one...
No matter what you think of Hawk, you have to admire his ability to turn his passion into not only a job, not only a career, but a full-fledged empire. And the article does a pretty good job of breaking down the whole thing, from multimedia to retail to amusement park rides. Let's see if Ryan Sheckler and Shaun White are taking tips.

Keep Up the Good Deeds - Clash at Clairemont
Published: 12:58 a.m. PT by Greg
So the Clash at Clairemont we told you about yesterday was a pretty cool event today. There were tons of people, tons of athletes and some great action for a great cause, the charity Grind for Life.
Among the athletes to show up for a massive autograph session were Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, Andy Macdonald, Mat Hoffman, Jamie Bestwick, Kevin Robinson, Steve McCann, Dennis McCoy, Pierre Luc Gagnon and many, many more...
Among the nuggets we learned: Kevin Robinson was taking advantage of being in town not only to support Grind For Life, but also to support the Junior Seau Foundation's 16th Annual Golf Classic. He was looking forward to the AST Dew Tour again this season and said he hoped to plant a couple of double flairs as well as some new stuff.
BMXer Steve McCann told us that the organization Grind For Life is very close to his heart, especially now, because his mother is battling cancer. This summer he'll still be aiming to compete in Dirt, Vert and Park.
Young Gun Alex Perelson (now 17-years-old) made a big splash in Skate Vert last season at the AST Dew Tour and X Games and he will be back this season. The Clash at Clairemont took place at his home park but the vert ramp was so crowded he couldn't take part in the demo. But he planned to take part in the pool jam...
We've got a few photos below and we'll have some more video (one featuring Mr. Hawk is below). But all in all it was a great event and
Fans line up for autographs...

White, Bright Repeat as World Superpipe Champ; Wells Reigns Supreme
Published: 12:33 a.m. PT by Greg
So it's been a few scant hours since the sixth annual World Superpipe Championships went down in Park City, Utah, and we've got all the results for you. In snowboarding, it was a pretty close copy to last year with Shaun White and Torah Bright repeating as champs and each pocketing $15K for their work. However, the picture for the men's skiers was a bit different, with Jossi Wells dominating the contest while last year's winner Simon Dumont took fourth (which just happened to be where Wells placed in '07).
We have all the results and more info about the event right here courtesy of our friend Wina Sturegeon from AdventureSportsWeekly.com who was on-site.
Be sure to check out Shaun White's explanation as to why he's not done as many events this season...
No photos to show off yet -- so I pulled last year's podium shot for the men. White and Aguirre both placed this season (Aguirre in second vs. third last year) and Danny Davis was second last year but didn't show this year. But otherwise the photo works great.

Call the Riot Police: Ryan Sheckler Signing on Sunday
Published: 1:59 a.m. PT by Me
So last time Ryan Sheckler did a signing things didn't turn out so well. Well, he's giving it a try again in SoCal with a signing tomorrow (Sunday) in Newport Beach at Fashion Island.
Maybe Fashion Island is better equipped to handle a throng of screaming teen-aged girls than a Tilly's in Long Beach, but we'll see..

Catch the Clash At Clairemont '2'
Published: 1:41 a.m. PT by Mike
I've always wondered what would happen if the cast of the movie 'Thrashin' got into an EXTREME contest against the guys from the movie 'Rad'. If you're not familiar with these movies, then shame on you. These two films are the staple of extreme bro-ness. But for those of you grew up with this fantasy of 'Thrashin' vs. 'Rad', comes the Clash at Clairemont 2 event in what city? That's right Clairemont. Come down to see Andy Macdonald, Tony Hawk, Bucky Lasek, and a bunch of other dudes take on BMX riders Jamie Bestwick, Kevin Robinson, and Rick Throne. Luckily the skaters out number the BMX'ers or else I would have to say 'Rad' would take the crown.
And all kidding aside, this event is for a good cause benefiting A Grind For Life, so a $10 donation would be appreciated. Come out later today if you can!

'Beautiful Losers' Premiere
Published: 1:12 a.m. PT by Mike

A few years ago there was an awesome book that came out called "Beautiful Losers". Spearheaded by artist Aaron Rose, 'Beautiful Losers' were about the movement, or movements, that revolutionized art in the early 90's. They were the kind of art collective that most groups try to model themselves after today. They celebrated their skate, surf, punk, hip-hop, graffiti and street cultures in their art, which reflected their lifestyles.
Well this long awaited documentary is finally coming out and premiering at SXSW film fest. It features the artists who in their own way contributed to their anti-establishment movement. Shepard Fairey (Obey), Mike Mills (Thumbsucker), Harmony Korine (Julian-Donkey Boy), Ed Templeton (Naked Wife Paintings), and many other artists are included in this sick documentary. Check out the trailer here and ready to be inspired.

Wangle Tangl Update
Published: 12:29 a.m. PT by Mike
Home court advantage was evident for the Asthetiker crew at the Swatch TTR 5-Star Asthetiker Jam Wangle Tangl. Wangle Tangl ? I wonder if they got inspiration for that name from Kiss FM's Rick Dees' Wango Tango. Well good thing the qualifiers didn't suck as bad as Wango Tango. The course consisted of a floaty kicker line composed of three tables and a variety of hips.
Each snowboarder had two attempts to score the best from a 100-point scale. The overall score of the two days determined which twelve riders would compete into Saturday's final.
The snowboarders will be competing for the $50,000 prize purse with the first place going home on a Suzuki Motocross bike and 50 Swatch TTR Ranking points.

Metal Mulisha Represents on 'Best Damn Sports Show'
Published: 2:21 a.m. PT by Greg
Usually the "Best Damn Sports Show Period" on FOX Sports isn't the first place you'd look to for something action sports related. Of course, I have never, ever seen the show so I couldn't tell you if they ever have done anything. But it looks like I will be watching it tonight because there's going to be something genuinely interesting on. "Best Damn" correspondent Amanda Beard (apparently she's an Olympian but why do I know her more from Playboy?) pays a visit to the Metal Mulish compound and hangs out with a ton of riders, including the man himself, Brian Deegan, along with Ronnie Faisst, Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg, Jeremy Lusk, Ox Kargola, Ryan Hagy, Jimmy Fitzpatrick, Collin Morrison, Beau Manley and Taka Higashino.
Sounds good to me. See it at 11 p.m. on FOX Sports or check your local listings to see when it repeats one of a 1,000 times after that. If you don't want to watch, you can read about the segment on the Mulisha website.

Robbie Maddison Human; Injured in Crash
Published: 1:59 a.m. PT by Greg
Just in case it seemed like Aussie FMX rider and world-record holder Robbie Maddison was a robot and indestructible comes word that he had a pretty bad crash in Melbourne while showing off for the media. I guess it's all relative. Bad to me, but the fact that he was walking around after, smiling and showing off a punctured stomach wound would seem to indicate that Maddison's doing okay.
Anyway, you can read all about the story here and since this was promoting an upcoming appearance Maddo's doing down under to break his long jump record, there were plenty of photogs there. Oh goody. Check out some shots below (all credit Michael Potter)...

Red Bull Gap Session Gets Ready
Published: 1:19 a.m. PT by Mike
I just love it when bros in eXtreme sports push each other to the edge. What's even better is when corporate sponsors do the pushing while they sit back on their large piles of money, or large piles of energy drinks. And that is what makes the Red Bull Gap Session 2008 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany so radical! Believe it or not, Garmisch-Partenkirchen also happens to be my favorite vacation spot in the entire world!
Well on March the 8th, the top riders in the world will come together in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to try out the mega-sized gaps. Not only are these the biggest gaps in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, but they're also the biggest gaps on this planet. And trust me, I know Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen does have some insane jumps. But with jumps like these, the people of Garmisch-Partenkirchen will have never seen so much airtime.
Just how large are these jumps in Garmisch-Partenkirchen you might ask? Well it took three hundred and fifty truckloads of snow. You know how much snow that is in Garmisch-Partenkirchen's perspective? That would equal about 48,000 bottles of Garmisch-Partenkirchen's favorite beer Darismhach-Breinstachstein. Now that's a lot of beer.
The gap measures 65 feet tall and 164 feet wide with a total length of 229 feet. When boarders like Chad Otterstrom, David Benedek, Gigi Ruff, Antti, Autti, the others step off that plane in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen airport, they will bear witness to something that neither Garmisch-Partenkirchen nor the rest of the world has ever seen.
Be sure to check out the Red Bull Gap Session for more info and for the live web cast and we'll see you in Garmisch-Partenkirchen!!!

Bones with A Grind For Life
Published: 12:59 a.m. PT by Mike
You may have heard of Grind For Life, which was started in 2003 by skater Mike Rogers who battled sarcoma cancer not once, but twice. He went through an extensive 17-hour surgery, a cranial-facial resection with a brain lift, removal of eye, cheekbone, and half of the roof of his mouth and some teeth, all to remove the tumor from behind his right eye. Mike has fully recovered and is skating again.
Grind For Life's mission is to help families financially who must travel long distances to see loved ones in bigger and accommodating hospitals. Bones Wheels have contributed to Grind For Life with a new wheel dedicated to the cause. One dollar for every wheel sold will specifically go towards apartments near the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in Manhattan. And it will ensure that families of those in the hospital will be near at all times. Sounds good to us.

Epicly Later'd: John Cardiel Episode 11
Published: 12:39 a.m. PT by Mike
Do you remember when you were a kid and you used to throw your WWF wrestling figures or G.I. Joe's down the stairs and the toys would seem un-phased? Well that's what John Cardiel looks like in this episode. Man, this episode is dope because it's all about John and the dude really looks like his body takes a toll skating some of these spots. And it includes some really interesting commentary that gives insight on some memorable John Cardiel moments.
My favorite moment is this episode is when they run into a psychic and she observes John as suicidal because of his aura. You wouldn't think of him as suicidal but there's definitely something in him that makes him damn crazy.

For all you Floridians: if you have been stressing out lately because you're worried that your vote is not going to count in the Democratic primary, then give some time for yourself and attend the Tampa Pro 2008 in a couple of weeks. It begins on Friday, March 21st and goes on through the weekend. It's sure to be a fun event with appearances by Lance Mountain, Mark Gonzales and Neil Blender. If you can't make it, there will be a live webcast on Sunday the 23rd on 411VM. And if you're going to skate in it, I'm sure the total cash prize of a hundred thousand g's should motivate you.
And finally, if you do win some of that cash, remember this: don't allow yourself to be disenfranchised in one of the most important elections in modern history. Donate your cash winnings to your state for the re-election to ensure that your voice will be heard. But if you win and you're not from Florida (or Michigan), then go out and have fun. Enjoy your cash, go buy some baseball cards, or maybe go see that new dancing flick, 'Step It Up 2 The Streets.'

Templeton Posters For A Good Cause
Published: 2:33 a.m. PT by Mike
Ed Templeton is not only one of the most influential skateboarders thanks to his creation of Toy Machine, but he's also influential in the art world. And while we're on the topic of influence, he's also responsible for making young boys like me (at the time) lust over his wife with his featured nude print spreads of her in Big Brother Magazine back in the '90s.
Well, he and high profile skate photographer Grant Brittain are collaborating in an effort to help those victims of the recent Southern California Wild fires by selling posters of their work. You can check out their posters at So-Cal Fire Poster Project
(along with many other artists) and all proceeds will be given to the Salvation Army.

King Of The Ramp Results
Published: 1:49 a.m. PT by Mike
The King of the Ramp Contest celebrated its 5th Anniversary this past weekend at the Alpewa building in Tyrol, Austria. It was almost like an E.U. gathering with contestants from all over Europe. The increased money prize of 5000 Euro gave the skaters that much more incentive to kill it. That extra hunger could especially be seen in Fertit who made it close to impossible for others to skate as he took that ramp like a road rat. Skaters found it difficult to drop in and have to skate around him. If I were in that contest, I would have dropped a few jacks onto the ramp while he skated like what happened to Josh Brolin in ‘Thrashin’. Danger Dave’s finger flip lien to tail was probably the sickest trick of the event. You can watch that below.
Here are the results.
1. Anders Tellen (Germany)
2. Martin Jurasek (Czech)
3. Andy Scott (England)
4. Guillaume Mocquin (France)
5. Harri Puupponen (Finland)
6. Emilio Arnanz (Spain)
7. Ferit Batir (Austria)
8. Roman Astleitner (Austria)
9. Alex Giraud (France)
10. David Martelleur (Belgium)

Innovative 'Live' Oakley X Bebo Snowboard Film
Published: 1:33 a.m. PT by Mike
Companies are sprouting up left and right with ideas on how to improve the limitations of current social networks. Bebo is one such company and it's got an edge since it's teaming with Oakley and first-time Italian filmmaker Carlo Mancini in creating a new film documentary called 'Conquering Demons' that examines the "psychology of fear" in extreme sports athletes, specifically snowboarding.
Raw, unedited footage of 'Conquering Demons' will be made available daily for Bebo's audience to view starting March 6th. This is where the social networking comes in. Users of Bebo will be able to share their thoughts and opinions of the raw footage seen and will be able to partake in the filmmaking process.
This can either work really well, or can be disastrous and very confusing for the filmmakers. It all depends whom the audience is and if they will take this seriously. Because I know that if this were to be handled by those I know on social networks, the film would be given loads of ridiculous suggestions all for their own amusement. Actually that sounds fun! Sign me up Bebo.

Regardless of whatever name it uses, the ski and snowboarding contests will descend upon Sun Valley, Idaho next week (March 14-16).
We've got a preview here from Circuit 'cross ski tech and coach Jeff Sadis so be sure to check it out.
And don't worry, we'll have all the results from the event in a week.

You should check out the photo gallery on Surfing magazine of Pat Towersey and the RVCA crew on a trip to Panama. They get some great waves down there and Steve Sherman was there to see every second of it.
You can see the gallery on the site in its full glory but I've also pasted it below if you want to check it out.
