Rip Curl Pro Search Underway in Chile
Published: 4:10 p.m. PT by Greg

The Rip Curl Pro Search in Arica, Chile, is underway, with round one action just about complete. Surfing is done for the day after unfavorable conditions arose.

So far in round one, there are a couple of surprises, with Andy Irons and Taj Burrow both going down in defeat, along with Bede Durbidge and Fred Patacchia. However, defeat in round one simply means the surfers will have to suit up for round two, while winners in this round get to jump to round three.

Making the grade today are current world #1 Mick Fanning and eight-time world champ Kelly Slater, who were joing by Bobby Martinzes and Bruce Irons, among others.

For a full recap of the round, read the full story.. Round one may complete tomorrow, when high waves are expected. Fans who won't be in Chile (anyone there?) can trek on over to the official site to watch the action live online!

brian_deegan_xd06-19-07_200x300Kickin' It at the "Disposable Hero" Screening
Published: 3:55 a.m. PT by Greg

Lat34 was at the free screening of "Disposable Hero: The Brian Deegan Story" in Hollywood last night. It was a fun event and Deegan showed up, along with fellow Mulisha man Beau Manley. Sal Masekela and Jason Bergh of Berkela Films, were also on hand.

The movie is great, if you haven't already seen it (you can buy it from the movie's site), and Deegan was a great guy in person (we did have an interview with him via phone last week). Sal and Jason were good. Expect a long-overdue interview with them on the site at some point in the near future.

We have a huge recap plus photos right here. Check it out.

marissa_miller_160x130Supermodel (and surfer) Marisa Miller Rumored to be Available Again
Published: 3:10 a.m. PT by Me

Marisa Miller, Lat34's featured Girl On this week (you can see her tomorrow), is rumored to be on the market. Her publicist had no comment when asked if she was splitting from her husband.

Here's a thought: If Kelly Slater ends up with Marisa Miller (she participated in Slater's Celebrity Invitational a couple of years ago at Tavarua), he will cement his place as the 'Men of All Men'. Eight-time world champion in surfing. Former boyfriend of another mega-hotty, Giselle Bundchen. Involved with Cameron Diaz... And potential suitor for Marisa Miller (nothing substantial here, just dreaming up a scenario).

Ah, to be Sl8ter.

Go Skateboarding Day with The Beastie Boys
Published: 2:24 a.m. PT by Greg

As if Go Skateboarding Day in itself wasn't going to be crazy enough, at several locations across the country there is also going to be a listening party for the new Beastie Boys CD. "The Mix-Up" comes out next Tuesday, but if you check out the action at Skatepark of Tampa, Skatelab in Simi Valley, 3rd Lair in MN and a bunch of other places, you will be able to hear it all the way through before anyone else.

becky_mantin_200British Weathergirl Critically Injured While Surfing
Published: 2:11 a.m. PT by Greg

Becky Mantin, a weathergirl for the UK's ITV network, is undergoing treatment after cracking her head open while surfing in Cornwall in the UK. The 25-year-old collided with another surfer on June 7 and was hit in the back of her head with a board.

Initially she visited the hospital and was diagnosed with a concussion and slight memory loss. She was released but later collapsed. She was taken back to the hospital where she received brain scans.

ITV expects her to be back in a few weeks, but it doesn't sound like she'll be in any condition to work right away...

ryan_nyquist_160x130_cow0806Lasek, Nyquist Talk Dew Tour on Fox Sports Radio
Published: 1:43 a.m. PT by Greg

Check out the following interview clips with Ryan Nyquist and Bucky Lasek as they get interviewed on Fox Sports Radio's "Game Time Live."

Bucky was interviewed on the 6th and among the things he hit were: the pleasures of Baltimore being the first stop of the Dew Tour, turning off the "professional" Bucky in the off-season and collecting baseball cards. He also explains why he can't stay on the road longer than two weeks... Oh, and I guess he was going to see "Pirates 3..." Too bad for him.

Nyquist was interviewed yesterday and took on some of the following topics: text messaging his fiance, being the "old man" at the Dew Tour and about some of the changes that hit this year's tour. He also noted that you're more likely to get knifed at the Dew Tour after hours. You'll have to listen to figure that one out.

Listen to the interviews below -- and if you don't have flash, well... install it.

chad_kagy_xgames12finals_160x130Kagy, Warden Featured in Post Article
Published: 12:22 a.m. PT by Me

Whenever it comes to a Dew Tour stop, you can look forward to seeing the local paper, for once, start covering action sports and try to explain it to the masses. The Washington Post is no different, really. It does some action sports coverage here and there that's not too bad, but when they do have a fairly good story like the below, it's pretty silly that the header links to stories from last year...Ah well.

The article focuses on a visit the writer took to Camp Woodward and some of the BMX riders he talked with there, including Chad Kagy and Zack Warden. You get to find out some interesting tidbits, including that Zack got his front two teeth replaced after a recent crash. Kagy assures him it's fine -- after all, he's had seven teeth replacements.

There's a quote from Scotty Cranmer, who had his teeth replaced after last year's Dew Tour finale, where he took a faceplant in the finals...

"It better slow down, because it's getting too ridiculous," he said. "People are doing things every day that nobody thought would ever get done. We don't get paid enough to take these risks. Some of this stuff is basically crazy."

It's a good story. Check it out if you have some time.

Injured Margera Misses Journey Stop;  Shaun White Drops In
Published: 12:09 a.m. PT by Greg

Shaun White was rockin' in Tenn. this weekend at the Journeys Backyard BBQ stop in Nashville, along with FMXer Brian Deegan (did you miss our interview? Read it here) and some of the rest of the Metal Mulisha crew. However, missing for the second straight year was Bam Margera, this time thanks to a torn liver...

From Bamargera.com:

While skateboarding Louisville's enormous fullpipe, Bam sustained a concussion and torn liver. After 3 days in the hospital, he was released and is back home making a great recovery progress. Just no lifting anything over 10lbs for 2 weeks.

Ouch - no specific day mentioned for the injury, but the entry was dated Saturday....

Andy Irons Head 160x130Andy Irons, Taylor Knox Talk Chile
Published: 12:41 a.m. PT by Greg

Surfers are getting ready for the Rip Curl Pro Search in Arica, Chile, which sees its waiting period begin on June 20. Among them - Andy Irons, who is struggling to win his first event of the year. He is fast falling behind Mick Fanning in the Foster's ASP World Tour rankings and it's time to step up...

Irons did win the event in 2006, when it was held in La Jolla Mexico. He faced Taylor Knox in the final.

“Defending the Search title is unique because you’re dealing with an entirely different element than the one you won the event in,” Irons said. “The wave in Arica is the exact opposite of what we dealt with in La Jolla last year, so it levels the playing field for sure.”

bwa_2007_logoRed Bull Big Wave Africa Not Going Off
Published: 12:27 p.m. PT by Greg

The bad luck continues for Red Bull events today. Despite some positive indications, the Red Bull Big Wave Africa is not going off... Here's the latest:

ERRATIC STORMS APPROACHING

According to contest director Johnny Paarman, the storms are producing sizable swells but not the conditions needed to run the contest. "We know now, after watching it for so many years, that the south-west swells are not ideal," said Johnny. "We found that these swells get diminished by Tafelberg, the outside reef at Dungeons, and they lose a lot of energy. For the optimum swell to get to the Dungeons reef it needs tocome from a west-south-west direction. That way the swells get throughunhindered and with all the power required. That's what we're waiting for."

According to Spike from Wavescape the modules we are tracking show a solid swell pattern in the beginning of the week which starts dissipating towards the end of Tuesday. The swell direction is also not conducive for the contest but with a pulse on Wednesday and another possible storm on Saturday there will definitely be surf around Cape Town for the week. For now the big wave aficionados will get a chance to surf some giant waves at Dungeons, but not in a contest situation.

However, unlike the Empire of Dirt event (updated below), there is a 12-week waiting period for the BWA event, so there's pleny of time and opportunities for it to go off soon...

Red Bull Empire of Dirt Canceled
Published: 11:48 a.m. PT by Greg

Posted on the Empire of Dirt site:

EVENT CANCELED DUE TO SERIOUS DAMAGE TO COURSE BY HEAVY RAIN

Newton Abbot, 15th June, 3pm - Kye Forte and organizers of Red Bull Empire of Dirt, are incredibly disappointed to announce that the event has had to completely canceled for 2007.

Unusually heavy rain throughout Thursday night, and most of Friday, has damaged the course so extensively, that the hard working course crew will be unable to complete repairs in time.

Naturally, everyone involved, including Kye, Red Bull, the course shapers, event crew, and of course the world class riders, who have traveled from far and wide, are very disappointed. However, spirits are high, as planning for Red Bull Empire 2008 has already begun!

The event sounded very cool, but so it goes. I guess that's what happens when you try to set up an event in the UK, where rain is a way of life. Lest we forget Red Bull's problems in Ireland with the X-Fighters being rained out...

fuel_logo_200wASEC 's Trip to Congress on Fuel and FOX
Published: 1:48 a.m. PT by Greg

Members of the Action Sports Environmental Coalition (ASEC) were in Washington DC last month to testify before the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee -- it was a historic moment: said to be the first time a skateboard was ever brought into the hallowed halls of the Capitol. Bob Burnquist led the group, along with former pro snowboarder Circe Wallace; X-Games winner Jen O’Brien; Tom Campion, founder of Zumiez; ASEC Executive Director Frank Scura; and Scott A. Murray, director of the ASEC / Toyota Bob Burnquist Global Cooling Challenge.

"I was energized by the experience and I hope its not the last time that I get to support the cause by making a trip out to Capitol Hill – with or without my skateboard," Burnquist said of his appearance.

Now the rest of the world can catch the scene by tuning into Fox Sports Net or Fuel to see "The Weekly Update w/ Boost Mobile." It'll air only once on Fox, but it airs about a million times on Fuel.

Here are the times for Fuel:

Saturday (6/16/07): 11:00 am, 4:00 pm, 7:00 pm and 2:00 am Sunday (6/17/07): 11:00 am, 2:00 pm, 4:30 pm and 2:00 am Monday-Friday (6/18/07 through 6/22/07) 2:30 pm, 5:30 pm, 8:30 pm and 11:30 pm

The ASEC was dounded in 2001 by Frank Scura, Bob Burnquist, Jen O’Brien and Damon Way and is dedicated to empowering people to adopt a sustainable lifestyle in a way that embraces their existing lifestyle and enhances it. It also aims to inspire the action-sports industry and its participants to value and take action toward social and environmental responsibility. Sounds good.

ross_01Quiksilver Pimps the Silver Surfer (and Fantastic Four) - Win Stuff
Published: 3:31 p.m. PT by Me

Apparently there is a movie that comes out today that has some sort of "silver" surfer in it. Wish I had seen an ad for it someplace.... Ah well...

Quiksilver hosted a special screening of "The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" last night in Newport Beach, drawing a mix of surf fans and surfers who were excited to see how the fantastic Jessica Alba and the other three guys would save the world.

Among those on hand, Quiksilver surfers Kelly Slater and Strider Wasilewski, as well as former world champ Peter Townend. No word on what they thought of the movie.

The event also served to show some of the Silver Surfer-inspired products created by Quik for the film's release, including Tees, Board shorts, a wetsuit and a limited edition surfboard shaped for the film by Al Merrick.

Quik is also doing a contest around the movie and unlike HBO/Billabong's "John From Cincinnati" contest (here), which only has one prize, this one has 484... Four grand prize winners will take home the items listed above, while the rest will get either a video game, DVD or a poster.

Go here to enter and for more info.

Oh wait, here are some photos for you from last night, plus one of Jessica Alba at the film's premiere -- just because we can.

shaun_white_oly06_147x204Is Shaun White #12 in the World - Among All Athletes?
Published: 2:57 a.m. PT by Me

ESPN is doing some thing where it is going to come up with a list of the top 32 athletes among all sports and then it will face them off NCAA bracket-style... Right now it's an unofficial list -- it's up for discussion and users are being asked their opinion (and opinions they have -- 2,400+ so far) -- but the ESPN guys rank The Flying Tomato Animal as #12.

That means he's behind people like Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant and Maria Sharapova, but ahead of an esteemed list of Danica Patrick (are you kidding me?), Michael Phelps (who?) and Michelle Wie (ummm). As a snowboarder, he might be pretty good, but I have trouble ranking him as one of the top 12 skateboarders, much less one of the top 12 athletes in all of action sports.

Ah well -- these lists are all pretty lame, anyway. At least until we do one. Then it will be up there with the word of God. Read more..

HBO has signed a promotional partnership with Billabong to pimp "John From Cincinnati." The pact makes sense as Billabong pro surfer Keala Kennelly stars as Kai on the series. Billabong's Times Square store in NYC and Universal City store in LA will promote the show in-store with co-branded materials and they are teaming on a "Catch the Wave & Win" sweepstakes.

Unfortunately, there's only one prize (no free gear) -- but it's a good one. You +1 get flown to Maui in December during the Billabong Pro and get to watch the comp (for 3 days/2 nighs) as well as "meet and greet" Keala.

Be sure to read the small print: Open only to residents of the 50 United States and Washington D.C. who are 18 years of age or older as of 8/31/07. Plus some other little legalese.

And some more good news -- you don't need to go to the stores to entry the contest You can do it right here....

Apparently so. And it's not a new thing either. Mother Nature brings in clumps of cobblestone from time to time, and this year is no different. It's actually becoming an eye (and foot) sore.

At least the surf still rips. Read it....
