Hanging in Hollywood With the Sports Elite - The ESPYs Extreme Party
Published: 5:29 a.m. PT by Greg
So Lat34 was up in Hollywood last night for a big pre-party for the ESPY's, which happen tonight (but air on Sunday). The party had an "Extreme" theme, based around a 30-foot mini ramp in the parking lot that crossed over to a halfpipe. There were about a dozen X Games athletes there (including Chad Kagy, Kevin Robinson, Morgan Wade, and more) doing a demo for a couple of hours as the guests arrrived.
And guests there were -- We have a full recap here along with a photo gallery. There were so many people it was hard to keep up, incluidng a bunch of pro NFL ballers. We kept our eyes open for the action sports guys and we saw a few -- Ryan Sheckler, Rob Dyrdek and Travis Pastrana, to name a few. I think Torah Bright was there -- need to see if we can dig up a photo of her. But there were a ton of people.
You should read my recap because I don't really hold back any punches there -- the paparazzi were hilarious. The whole scene was crazy. But it was fun in the end. Though I am starving -- you go to these things and even though there is free food and drink everywhere, who can eat? Kudos to ESPN for putting on a great party at a great location. I think the X Games parties are going to be sick.
One more time, here are the links to the recap and photo gallery. Plus a few photos below to get you started.

Stephen Murray Update: Special Visitors and More
Published: 2:49 a.m. PT by Greg
Here's the latest update from Stephen Murray's family on BMXTalk.com:
Sorry for the wait for this latest update, the trip to Denver and the fact that so much has happened in the last 48 hours that it's hard to comprehend.
OK, the last couple of days have certainly been a rollercoaster. First of all, Sunday, Stephen was exhausted due to lack of sleep, however, his pneumonia has almost passed and his temperature is near normal and his lungs are improving. So, Melissa has been awesome and supported him whilst Cynthia and I have travelled 5600 miles, 4 plane journeys in 26 hours to Craig Hospital in Denver Colorado and back. This was an experience but that's another story. The most positive thing that came out of this trip is that Craig is definitely the place that Stephen should have his Rehab.Tomorrow, Wednesday, the Craig hospital, is flying a nurse to Baltimore to see if Stephen is ready to fly to Denver, this could happen as soon as Thursday or next Monday, depending on when we can organize the Air ambulance. Stephen is definitely focussed on getting out of ICU and getting into Rehab and we will update you as and when.
Yesterday, Stephen's Dad, Jeff, and his Grandad, Bob arrived from the UK, this put the biggest smile on his face you can imagine. This is a huge support for the rest of the family.
Today has been extremely busy and somewhat tiring but very productive for Stephen. He received 4 distinguished visitors. The first was Wade Martin, President of the Dew Tour, who flew in from Chicago, specifically to see Stephen for the day. This was amazing and the family would like to thank him for the time and everything he and the Dew Tour have done for Stehen and continue to do since the accident. The next two were Dr John McDonald( a true inspiration)(Google him) and Patrick Rummerfield( Google him aswell)(unbelievable). Dr McDonald will be his outpatient rehab Dr, after Stephen has finished at Craig. However, the biggest smile on Stephen's face appeared when Brian Foster (BMX legend and one of Stephen's hero's) came to visit.
Stephen says he is now over ICU and his main focus is getting well enough to take the Air Ambulance journey to Denver ASAP.
We have had so many headaches with Stephen's health insurance, so next time anybody has anything to say about the NHS, thank your lucky stars you live in the UK.
Many of you may not have met Melissa, Mason or Seth but Melissa would like you to know how much your messages of support mean to the family. Keep them coming.
We also have a couple of photos of Stephen here that some of you may have seen on the myspace website of The Compound -- they were taken at Stephen's house by The Compound's owner Shane Guillen on June 18th, only a few days before Stephen left to Baltimore for the Dew Tour. You can see them below.
Shane sent them over with the following message:
The organization "ProRiders.tv" needs to be taken much more seriously. This kind of stuff can not continue. Extreme athletes need to think a little bit more about their future and the future of BMX/extreme sports, and come a little, no, a lot, closer together.
What we do is more dangerous than NASCAR, NFL, Hockey, Sky Diving, etc. The only sport that compares to us BMXers/FMXers is "Bull Riding." And we are the bulls??? And how much do "they make"??
The Compound has already held two benefit jams for Stephen and is teaming up with friend Rick Lakin to do a dirt jump contest in Woodcrest, CA, on July 14th, with all money again going to Stephen Murray Family Fund. Check out a flier below, but here are the details:

The site provides a searchable database of the best beaches in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland that includes things like surf reports, a breakdown of facilities and nearby restaurants/shops, visitor feedback, and many other helpful tidbits. So if you're a Brit who's headed to the beach, or just some tourist who plans on visiting the Isles in the near future, check out the site or you'll only have yourself to blame if your visit to the beach turns out to be a bust.

Protest in Arkansas For and Against Skateboarders
Published: 1:56 a.m. PT by Greg
Protesters came out in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Sunday to show their support for both sides involved in the Go Skateboarding Day arrests that have made national headlines.
On one side, protesters held up up skateboard decks and signs as they walked the streets. On the other, supporters of the police officers involved wore shirts that had the following slogan emblazoned on it: C.O.P.S - Citizens Opposing Punks on Skateboards.
A spokesman for the protesters spoke of the international impact that this story now has, thanks to the power of the Internet. Meanwhile, one of the "C.O.P.S." brigade said it was simple -- a police officer shouldn't be put in any trouble for cracking down on kids who were breaking the law.
See the video for yourself here - but you may want to have IE -- I couldn't make it work with Firefox. Otherwise I do have a couple of screengrabs from the video below.
Meanwhile, the EBay auction for the Cops vs. Skateboarders video is over and there were no bids -- the minimum bid was $1,000. We'll see if it's relisted.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Live Earth in Five Minutes
Published: 1:14 a.m. PT by Greg
At least that's about how much time it took me to read this recap of NBC's three-hour recap of the Live Earth concerts from around the world. Why should you care? Well, because it's the world, man!
I caught a few songs here and there on Sirius radio -- ranging from Roger Waters to The Beastie Boys to The Pussycat Dolls (not one of my favorite moments, I admit) to a bunch of people from Brazil I have no idea who they are..
We also have a photo gallery here of some of the artists you may have seen or missed... Jack Johnson, The Police, AFI, The Beastie Boys and a couple of more... Some photos below.
Note to the MSN folks -- when I try to watch any recap clips, I get a great "Zune" ad -- but nothing beyond that. I tried about three or four videos and am done. Ah well, at least I heard some of it...
Here's the official site for you.

Stephen Murray Benefit Race Raises More than $3K
Published: 1:14 a.m. PT by Greg
A UK benefit race in Milton Keynes has raised more than $3,000 for the Stephen Murray Family fund. Here's an update from one of the users who was there on BMXTalk.com:
ok so only 87 riders turnt out, but those riders and their friends and family were very generous.
Once running costs were subtracted like toilet hire we made £1625.00 for Stephen or approx $3120.00.
Sorry we thought it was more when we counted it on site we didn't mean to misslead anyone, counting all that cash in the back of a van isn't an ideal situation.
Thanks to every one who helped out at the event today, especialy Conrad who was the ripe old age of 40 today, Happy Birthday Mate
I beleive some of the top raffle prizes will be donated to the next fund rasing event, lets hope this happens again and again and again and eventualy they go on the auction site.
Thanks to those who made the effort to come at such short notice, it isn't just about the money, The fact that people Stephen has never met are prepaired to do this for him will give a huge boost.
STAY STRONG
We gave you an update yesterday about the second benefit jam at The Compound. We also got a photo from Pete Demos of Haro Bikes who was there -- it's below. Great group shot. Check out the recap and photos from the jam.

Stephen Murray Update: Some Good News
Published: 12:09 a.m. PT by Greg
Here's the latest update, including what seems to be some pretty positive news, from Stephen Murray's family on BMXTalk.com:
First of all, Stephen and his family would like to send thanks out to everyone around the World who have sent messages and well wishes, it is a source of inspiration for all of them. They would like to send out special thanks to the medical team at the Dew Tour and the Paramedics in the Ambulance who gave Stephen mouth to mouth and CPR. It is hard to put into words their gratitude. They cannot thank them enough.
Today has been a better day. The pneumonia is now in remission and his temperature has dropped for the first time to under 100 and is now at 99.7.
He still remains on the ventilator but they are slowly weening him off and we remain optimistic.
Today, Stephen has been in the wheelchair twice for 2 hours each time, which is tough because it's very uncomfortable and hard to get used to because it makes him dizzy.
This morning a DVD with well wishes from riders who attended Red Bull Elevation in Whistler, Canada arrived and Stephen was stoked to see it although he was disappointed that there was no footage of the actual contest. He has asked to see footage of the crash from Baltimore. The fact that he wants to see it and know what happened is a sign of how mentally strong he is.
Tomorrow Cynthia and I are flying to Denver to see Craig Rehab Centre, which is predominately for Athletes like Stephen. The average age there is 33 and they are known for aggressive Rehab therapy. Also we are looking at Shepherd in Atlanta Georgia later in the week. Where he has his Rehab is vital to his recovery and so we feel we should visit each facility before making a decision.
Melissa will be at Stephen's bedside whilst we travel. Jeff and Stephen's Grandad arrive on Monday a couple of hours before we return.
Thank you once again for all your love and support.
Keep it coming.
A couple of personal notes -- We have gotten emails from users asking about the video of Stephen's crash, mainly because we have a a video on YouTube of a crash Stephen was in last year at the Dew Tour in Orlando (here) -- people find it and think that it's "the" crash. When they find out it isn't, they ask where it is. We have seen the video but did not shoot it or own it -- so please don't ask us to post it. If it is released by the family and permission given to use it, we would make the decision at that point as to whether or not to show it.
Also, I saw another web site write in a story about a rider almost "pulling a Stephen Murray" when he had to bail during a run at an event. Then I saw that same phrase on another site. Classless and no respect. My advice -- you see a site say that, let them know what you think and never read them again. I would expect you to do the same to us.

Stephen Murray Update: Pneumonia Recovery
Published: 8:30 a.m. PT by Greg
Here's the latest update on Stephen's condition from his family on BMXTalk, with Paul Roberts taking over for Martin Murray for the moment....
Alright, Martin flew back to the UK last night and has asked me to take over the updates until he returns.
Some good news yesterday, the hospital changed Stephen's medication and the nightmares and hallucinations he was having have since gone away. His temperature fluctuated yesterday peaking at 103 but is now back down to just below 101. The hospital have explained that this is to be expected and we're hoping that it will return to a more normal level.
We appreciate that a lot of you are worried about the pneumonia but this is almost par for the course and the fact that the hospital caught it early and are treating it with anti-biotics can only be a good thing.
Although Stephen's visitors are restricted to family, we decided to make an exception when Travis Pastrana dropped in 10 minutes after Martin left for England.(unlucky Muzz) This was a huge boost for Stephen and definatlty put a smile on his face.
Today has been a quiet, settled day of rest, which is greatly needed since he is still in critical condition. Melissa has been by his side all day while Cynthia and I have been in meetings for 7 hours with various organisations relating to rehab.
Please keep your E mails coming as they are a great source of support to Stephen and his family alike. The amount of concern and support from everyone has been nothing short of phenomenal and is very much appreciated.
Believe.
Meanwhile, there are two events happening this weekend that will help raise money for the Stephen Murray Family Fund, including the second Benefit Jam at The Compound in Perris, CA on Saturday and a benefit race in the UK on Sunday at the Milton Keynes Pineham track (more info on that).
Meanwhile, be sure to check out the EBay auction of a new Autographed DK 6 Pack Bike -- Check it out here.

J-Bay is Coming
Published: 12:01 a.m. PT by Greg
The ASP is getting all ready for its next event in J-Bay, South Africa. It's the Billabong Pro, and the holding period starts July 11. We've got a preview here.
Conditions should be ripe for the contest -- Surfline is predicting some sweet conditions.
Should be interesting as current ASP leader Mick Fanning won there last year (and in 2002), and current world #3 Andy Irons has a win there as well. If Kelly Slater comes, he should make it a tough contest....

Cop vs. Skateboarders Video For Sale on EBayPublished: 2:46 p.m. PT by Greg
Drew Irwin, the skateboarder who filmed a cop using what appeared to be excessive force against a group of skateboarders on Go Skateboarding Day in Hot Springs, Arkansas, just dropped us a not to let us know he is selling his video on EBay. Irwin was among a group of six skateboarders who were arrested on a variety of charges by officer Joey Williams, who was caught on video holding some of the skateboarders in a headlock and twisting their arms around behind their backs. The video he shot was posted on YouTube and instantly took off, becoming one of the top-viewed videos on the site with nearly 1.5 million views in only a couple of weeks.
The story drew national attention as Williams was placed on administrative leave and investigated for the possible use of excessive force. He was cleared by a review panel earlier this week.
Irwin and the other skateboarders will have their first trial date on July 20th.
Currently the EBay auction has 0 bids with a starting bid of $1,000. We're assuming that the money will help pay for Irwin's defense. Check out the auction yourself.
This is how the tape is described:
Go skateboarding day : cops vs skaters
Uncut complete video of incident in Hot Springs AR between Police and several youths.
This is the complete uncut un-censored video of the complete day leading up to during the incident and after the arrest of the youths.
The buyer will be purchasing all rights to use, sell or distribute the contents of the video.
The buyer will have the only copy of the complete tape. No other copies have been made or given to anyone else.

Russia Grabs the 2014 Winter Olympics
Published: 11:42 a.m. PT by Greg
I guess things like this do need to be planned out a bit in advance, but honestly I have a lot of other things on my mind that are more important than the 2014 Olympics, which are now a scant seven years away. But I guess the city of Sochi in Russia will need the time to prep. Located on the Black Sea, the city edged out Pyeongchang, South Korea (Salzburg, Austria was previously eliminated).
Start placing your bets on what phenom snowboarder will be the star of those games for the US. Shaun White may still be active then, but I wouldn't bet he would be an Olympian. But what do I know.
So here are your official sites for the next four Olympic Games:
- 2008 Summer: Beijing
- 2010 Winter: Vancouver
- 2012 Summer: London
- 2012 Summer: Sochi
Read more about the announcement or visit Sochi's campaign site. Oh, and where the hell's Sochi?
