mick_fanning_rcp07_160x130Mark Richards Thinks Fanning Could Break Slater, Irons' World Title Dominance
Published: 2:18 p.m. PT by Me

Former world champ Mark Richards thinks he knows who could break the stranglehold on the Foster's ASP World Championship that Kelly Slater and Andy Irons have held for the last five years: Mick Fanning.

"Mick is obviously an amazing surfer with an iron will to not only come back from a very serious injury but come back stronger than before... Of the Aussies, I think he's the one with the most chance of cracking the Kelly-Andy stranglehold. He seems to be the one who's the most pumped up about it."

Richards should know -- he's a surf legend and a four-time world champ himself (1979-1982). He and Fanning surfed together this last weekend during a reenactment of the 1977 Stubbies Classic.

Blind Snowboarder Raises Money For Charity
Published: 1:56 p.m. PT by Me

Adil Latif wanted to help victims of a 2005 Asian earthquake and decided the best way was to have a helicopter drop him on glacier. Sounds good, except this 25-year-old is basically blind.

Well, it took a little while buy Adi recently finished his ride down the Trient Glacier in Switzerland, and is well on his way to raising his goal of £14,000.

Some background plus Adi's blog about the descent...

Exhibit Honors Great Lakes Surfing
Published: 1:22 a.m. PT by Me

Don't let anyone tell you there's not good surfing on the Great Lakes. Now there's an exhibit in Grand Haven, Michigan, that traces the history of surfing in the area, from following Dr. Dave "Makaha Dave" Seibold from Hawaii to Grand Haven, to the development of the The Great Lakes Surfing Association.

Red Bull Thief on the Lam
Published: 1:16 a.m. PT by Me

So if you live in or around Plainville, CT (love that name), keep an eye open for someone who has a lot of Red Bull around -- he just may be a thief. Someone went into a Big Y and tried to walk out with more than $200 worth of Red Bull. When approached by a manager, the guy ran off. But "reportedly" the theft of Red Bull is something quite common in Connecticut. "It's something that's going around the entire state," said Police Lt. Brian Mullins.

You gotta love Red Bull.

Injured BMXer Loses Court Case
Published: 12:15 a.m. PT by Me

A court in Australia has determined that a BMX rider must pay a city council's court costs after losing a case in which he alleged that the council was responsible for a BMX park where he was badly injured.

Eighteen years ago, then 15-year old Scott Leyden broke his leg on a jump that had been modified by another rider. The court ruled that while the council did know the ramp had been modified, so did Leyden, and that he made a concious decision to still use it.

Now he faces paying more thna $30K (Aus) to the council in court costs. That's an expensive lesson.

Sandboarding: Safer The Snowboarding, SurfingMySpace Teams With Rip Curl to Stream Events
Published: 12:01 a.m. PT by Me

Leave it to a French website to have a story about a snadboarder in the US. This "Doctor Dune" says that sandboarding is not as dangerous as snowboarding and surfing (you can drown!), and that it doesn't harm the enviornment.

Yeah, well it doesn't look that fun, either. The sport claims 14,000 fans in the US.

Washington Girl Critically Injured While Car Surfing
Published: 12:04 a.m. PT by Me

There's been another accident with a car surfer -- imagine that. Not sure if this was intentional, but an 18-year-old girl was "dancing" on the roof on a 17-year-old boy's car when he (brilliant) decided to drive off. He didn't get far before she tumbled off and onto the ground. Now she's fighting for her life.

I guess you can't use a helmet to protect yourself from stupidity.

Here's some more about it..
