Eric Koston A Sell Out???

May 8, 2008 – 4:28 pm PT by Mike

limey_koston.jpg

Check out Ty Evan’s newly directed Bud Light Lime campaign starring Eric Koston as “Limey” the skater.  Not since the ’98 Ovaltine skateboard campaign has there been a cooler skateboard spot.  It’s pretty amazing what they were able to pull off here and quite entertaining.

Many people seem to be pretty pissed off that Koston agreed to this and are now labeling him a sell out.  They are claiming that he has lost all his street credibility by giving in to corporate America’s aim to increase mass appeal to the mainstream society.  Plus it would be pretty ironic that Koston is part of the Berrics; a site that constantly slams skateboarding in corporate images and advertising.

Mammoth’s 3rd Annual West Coast Invitational

May 8, 2008 – 4:25 pm PT by Me

chuckganddingo.jpg

Sure they posted this a bit late but the Snowboard Mag’s coverage of Mammoth’s 3rd Annual West Coast Invitational has an abundance of photojournalism and a few words to suit.  The contest seems more like a party with acts with Talib Kweli performing on the main stage.  Unfortunately the Snowboard Mag’s camera went flying while a stage diver smacked it and then disappeared into the crowd.  As for the event itself, its unorthodox format, which allows a free for all competition and results with the crowd voting for the winner.  This puts a lot of pressure on the boarder to put on a good show.  Check it out at the Snowboard Mag

The WiFi Nike Dunk

May 8, 2008 – 4:20 pm PT by Mike

nike-dunk-wifi-sneaker-2.jpg

I’ve been out of the sneaker game for some time now because the overly saturated market of such shoes like the “Tweety Bird Dunk”, and the “Custom High Kanye Dunk”.  These shoes just began looking ridiculous and fitting for those attending rave parties every Saturday night looking forward to popping pills.  Pure ridiculousness.  But with so many different releases from these shoe companies, odds are that they may present the public with something worth taking notice at.

Nike has debuted the Nike WiFi Dunk to the public and with highlight key elements like an integrated wireless internet detection system, which is embedded under the flap of the left shoe and a blinking LED signal notifying you of internet connections within 50ft away.  This shoe WiFi shoe is called “A Step In The Right Direction” and unfortunately for you sneaker geeks out there, this shoe will not be mass-produced according to the MSTRPLN

The prototype is a great looking sneaker and hopefully one day it will be available to the public because like me, I’m sure you have had your share of trouble trying to latch onto someone’s existing Internet connection.  Just expect to pay upwards of about $500 or more for these.

Jerry Hsu On CCS

May 8, 2008 – 4:16 pm PT by Mike

jerryhsu_ccs_08.jpg

Jerry Hsu is responsible for owing one of the best skate parts in skateboarding history (I know that’s a bold statement) but in my opinion it’s very true.  It’s probably due to the fact that he’s a young eccentric Asian skater with bad teeth, so I can totally relate.  On top of his major skate skills, he’s sponsored by some great teams and is part of the WESC contributor.  Jerry is now the latest addition to the CCS team and has a nice little interview on the CCS site.  Check it at CCS

Hi Shredability: Matt and Ford Archbold Part 2 of 2

May 8, 2008 – 4:13 pm PT by Me

This episode of Hi Shredability takes a look at Archy’s life with his son Ford.  The episode starts off with a great quote from Archy, which you can watch for yourself.

And if you want to see more on Archy, a recent documentary on his life was released and premiered in Newport Beach.  You can see the trailer for it here

Lay Day For Billabong Pro Tahiti

May 8, 2008 – 3:28 pm PT by Greg

girldancer7462tahiti08kirstin_l.jpg

The Billabong Pro Tahiti started its holding period today and due to less than optimum conditions a lay day was called.

“We had a good look at it and we are opting not to run today,” Contest Director Luke Egan said. “I watched it for an hour last night and if it looked like that this morning then I was definitely going to run. Time is on our side with the waiting period so we are going to utilize it fully.”

Conditions could be small for a few days and last year’s champ, Damien Hobgood, who was apparently going to miss the contest due to injury, may still sneak in if he feels up to it.

When action does kick off, you can watch it live on www.billabongpro.com. Until then, you can go to the site to see some pretty pictures of the Tahitian people. Like the woman above.

Here are the first round match-ups.

Billabong Pro Tahiti Round 1 Match-Ups:
Heat 1: Dean Morrison (AUS), Luke Munro (AUS), Daniel Ross (AUS)
Heat 2: Kai Otton (AUS), Leonardo Neves (BRA), Ricky Basnett (ZAF)

Heat 9: Mick Fanning (AUS), Pancho Sullivan (HAW), Jamie O’Brien (HAW)
Heat 10: Taj Burrow (AUS), Tom Whitaker (AUS), Bruno Santos (BRA)
Heat 11: Adrian Buchan (AUS), Jordy Smith (ZAF), Mikael Picon (FRA)

And here’s my fantasy surfing match-ups. I still have Damien in there. I may regret it. Last month I took out Kelly Slater because it looked like he was going to miss the Gold Coast event and look what happened then.

Jamie O’Brien

ESPN Sues Quiksilver Over X Design

May 8, 2008 – 2:05 am PT by Greg

quik_lawsuit_v2.jpg

Attention: anybody out there who wants to use the letter X in any design better watch out. ESPN apparently owns it.

The cable company has sued Quiksilver over its use of a stylized “X” design used on some of the company’s apparel designs. It sounds as though ESPN previously complained about the logo, but Quiksilver has “willfully” expanded its use of the design.

You can read more here but there’s not much info yet. No word from Quiksilver on the lawsuit as of yet.

We did a little digging and found one of the designs (pictured above). Yep, it’s an X.

Own a Piece of BMX History

May 8, 2008 – 2:03 am PT by Greg

Friends and family of Stephen Murray are hoping to put a ramp located at his former home on auction. The full ramp is pictured below with Stephen and TJ Ellis.

After Murray’s accident last June his home was put up for sale and the new owners will be leveling the dirt trails the home had. But they have agreed to allow the full ramp to be moved.

More details will be released later but check out the release that follows.

AM Getting Paid 2008

May 7, 2008 – 6:36 pm PT by Mike

nyjah-benfournier.jpg

Brent Petway, Elton Brown, Ronald Dupree?  Haven’t heard of them?  Neither have I.  They are the NBA Developmental League’s star players.  Amateurs in any industry have been getting recognition but in very small doses.  It’s as if nobody really cares about the AM’s.  No endorsements, no advertising, no recognition, no love.  I’m sure these guys are just as determined if not more determined than the NBA players.  Sure they aren’t as good yet, or as marketable but I’m sure that they have the ability to showcase some amazing skills.

That’s why Zoo York is doing a very thoughtful thing by throwing the 4th Annual AM Getting Paid Skate Contest.  This contest gives the less spotlighted skaters a chance to show that they may possibly be better than some pros and most importantly, give the AM’s some love.  Read the official press release below.

Answer These Questions, Win A Signed Board

May 7, 2008 – 6:30 pm PT by Mike

jasonlee_chrispastras_stereo1.jpg

I heard on the streets that Stereo Skateboards is throwing a contest all month long.  I can win a Stereo Sound Agent Kit, which includes a signed deck and a bunch of other swag.  And all I had to do was answer a couple of easy skateboard related questions.  I’m a skateboard expert.  What kind of questions can they possibly confront me with?

“What Stereo skater was featured in a Sonic Youth video?  What famous gap did Carl Shipman kickflip?”
