Chad Kagy Bucks The Competition in Dallas

Nov 02 2006 / Dallas, TX
When you win a big contest, even if it is a Prelim, you expect to get some sort of congratulations from your peers. Not a purple nurple. And yet that’s exactly what Chad Kagy received from Simon Tabron after Kagy’s winning run in Saturday’s BMX Vert Prelims in Dallas at the LG Action Sports Championships. Such is life as a pro BMXer.

Fourteen Vert riders were pre-qualified for Saturday’s Prelims. The top 10 proceed into the Finals where they will compete for a $30,000 1st place prize. Kagy qualified in 1st  after landing a handful of flairs and a giant tweaked out Indian air seat grab. Kagy recently finished the Dew Tour in 2nd place behind Jamie Bestwick, and won X Games earlier this year.

Simon Tabron, the culprit behind the purple nurple, came out with a couple of big runs that were good enough to qualify in 2nd. Tabron landed 540 after 540 variation including a big lookback 540 and alley oop 540, plus a mess of flairs. Whereas Jamie Bestwick has been the man to beat in the U.S., Tabron has been the man to beat throughout the LG Tour in Europe. He placed 1st in Virginia (U.S.), Amsterdam, Berlin, and Paris… and placed 2nd in Birmingham (UK). He’ll be giving Kagy and Robinson a run for their money in the Finals.

Kevin Robinson placed 3rd in Saturday’s Vert Prelims and looked rock solid as usual going into the Finals. Robinson pulled off a big opposite flair, a flawless no-handed flair and a perfect inverted 540. Robinson won the LG Tour stop in San Diego this year and finished 3rd for the season at the Dew Tour.

Jimmy Walker, Jay Eggleston, John Parker, Francisco Zurita, Mike Mancuso, Koji Kraft and Matt Fairbairn rounded out the top 10 qualifiers for Sunday’s Finals. Tom Stober showed up to Dallas testing the Vert waters after a recent serious back injury. Although he didn’t make it into the Finals he put on a good show.

Riders will take two runs each in Sunday’s Finals. Each run lasts 60 seconds, but they are only required to ride for 45 seconds. The additional 15 seconds can be used to add extra points to their scores if necessary.
