Daniel Dhers Does Dallas
Nov 02 2006 / Dallas, TXBMX Street Prelims kicked off the LG Action Sports Championships in Dallas this Halloween weekend. And despite it being All Hallows Eve… it wasn’t all that scary. I thought it would be, but it really wasn’t. That isn’t to say that the BMXers didn’t come to Dallas looking for blood. A $30,000 prize for 1st place brings out the devil in people, you know.
Competing for the big 30K prize purse were 19 of the biggest names in BMX including Ryan Nyquist, Ryan Guettler, Allan Cooke, Daniel Dhers and Dave Dillewaard. But, in the end it was Daniel Dhers who came out swinging with the biggest bag of tricks. Dhers, the recent winner of the 2006 Dew Tour BMX Park Title, took no time at all to warm up and blasted the course with a one-footed can can 360 tailwhip over the side box followed by a big double tail whip on the quarter pipe. And from there his fast-paced, super intense run didn’t slow down for a heart beat. Dhers goes into Saturday’s Finals in 1st place and looking nearly unbeatable – he was the only rider to score in the 90’s at Prelims.
Ryan Nyquist busted out a huge run that landed him in 2nd place at the end of Friday’s Street Prelims. Nyquist has been riding most of the season with an injured knee. He tore his ACL in the middle of the summer, but hasn’t let that minor detail slow him down. Nyquist’s qualifying run bumped Rob Darden into 3rd place who looked on fire Friday night. Rob Darden, riding for Haro, Adio and Ogio put down a big run that dominated the scoreboard for the first half of the contest until Nyquist and Dhers came along.

All 19 riders took two 60-second runs to qualify for the Street Finals. The top 10 riders with the highest scores will compete in Saturday’s Finals. The rest of the riders to qualify included Ryan Guettler, Steven McCann, Garrett Reynolds, Dave Dillewaard, Mark Webb, Allan Cooke and Josh Harrington.
Ryan Guettler, 2005 winner of the Dew Tour in BMX Dirt and Park, wowed the crowd with a couple of huge runs. With his big ol’ bag of tricks he’s sure to be a major contender in Saturday’s Finals. Fellow Australian Steven McCann looked solid as ever. Mark Webb of the UK, and winner of this year’s LG Tour in Birmingham, threw down a bunch of huge flairs and generally shredded up the course. We’ll be looking for more from him at the Finals.
