We Wanna Know! Kira Sheppard Interview

Oct 17 2006 / Los Angeles, CA

Five Questions For Kira Sheppard about life as a surfer girl

Lat34: At 20-years-old how do you feel about your life?
Kira: Very fortunate. All of the traveling and the people I have met and the cultures I have seen have helped me become a more well-rounded person in general. It keeps me open minded You see different religions, different foods, the way people take care of themselves. Travel inevitably changes who you are as a person.

Lat34: How is your Spanish now that you are living in Puerto Rico?

Kira: Not as good as it should be. When I first moved down to Puerto Rico I was trying. I can do what I need to but most of the time people speak a lot of English so I just don’t end up speaking as much as I do. When I am down there for a few months it gets pretty good. I traveled all summer so it was good then.

Lat34: What are the biggest waves you’ve ever surfed?

Kira: Big waves are not my forte, but in Puerto Rico we have a wave called Wilderness so when it’s big everywhere, that one holds. On a 10-12 foot day I take the smaller ones, but those days to me aren’t the ones I look for. Those are the days you catch two waves in an hour and sit and wait for the right one. It’s a rush but it’s scary. I prefer head high and wave after wave.

Lat34: Worst accident ever?

Kira:I was doing what we call a “tow-at” where you are behind a jet ski and you come into the wave and the jet ski pulls you off the back and you slingshot yourself. The lip is breaking and you hit it or do airs or whatever you want to do. I was injured badly I went to hit the lip and when I was forcing the tail I took too much pressure and I tore two ligaments in my back foot and I heard it pop. It was terribly painful and I could barely swim in. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced surfing.

Lat34: Best thing about being a surfer girl?

Kira: Getting to spend most of my time outside in the ocean and getting to see everything.
For me surfing has brought me around the world and back since I was a little kid. This has always been in my nature to travel and explore and surfing has made it possible to do that.
