The ASP got Bell's Beach about as good as it gets and it lit Kelly Slater's fire. He is remarkable in smaller waves, but in stuff like this, he is a true phenomenon. Slater beat Joel Parkinson in the final to take his second victory of the 2006 season.

Kelly Slater loves all waves, but he loves left, reefbreak barrels a little better than most. With his hyper-flexible lower back, Slater can contort himself into whatever cylinder of water Mother Nature throws at him, and he has a long history of success at waves like Grajagan, Teahupoo and Cloudbreak. This is Slater during the Billabong Pro Tahiti held at Teahupoo in May.

Slater hotdogs a smaller day at Teahupoo during the Billabong Pro Tahiti. He won this event in 2000, 2003 and 2005, but didn't defend his championship this year. He suffered a rib injury in his semifinal heat against Fred Pattacia, and took more beatings to finish third.

Slater is only human and every once in a while the ocean makes him look awkward. This is Slater during the semis of the Billabong Pro, making worse the rib injury he suffered earlier.

In June, the ASP went south of the border to this new spot in Mexico, and scored one of the best waves in the history of the tour. Slater was still injured at the Rip Curl Search WCT, and finished fifth - his lowest placing of the year.
