The Honda Ski Tour Halfpipe Recap

If you came to The Honda Ski Tour looking for a spectacle, your search ended tonight at the halfpipe final. The whole thing felt surreal; the lights, the unbelievable height  the boys , the energy, and some of the biggest falls of the wee. The finals had it all. Peter Olenik upped the ante almost immediately boosting a double flip on his first hit and following it up with back-to-back 720’s.

Unfortunately he couldn’t hold it together and spun out both runs on a 900 towards the bottom. If he sticks his whole run the score would be just huge as that double flip is one of the newest and most impressive tricks I’ve seen in the pipe. Jossi Wells came out firing as well, putting two solid runs together and ending up in third. The surprise of the final was young Matt Phillipi whose first run was good enough to keep in second. He went for it on his second run but went over the handlebars on his fifth hit to give Simon Dumont his victory lap. Simon’s first run was on a different level. Hardly checking his speed as he nuked toward the first wall and boosted the biggest air of the whole final. Easily 20 feet out of the pipe he rolled out a smooth 540 flat spin that sent the crowd into hysterics. Six jumps and probably 16 revolutions later he cruised into the first place position with a 93.75. That score was good enough to hold up through the second round and a although his victory lap wasn’t mind blowing the 25 grand in his bank account and a new Honda truck had him smiling widely.
