Goofies Reign Supreme For 2nd Year

Nov 03 2006 / Los Angeles, CA

Skaters came out in droves to the third annual etnies Goofy vs. Regular contest held October 20-22 at the Lake Forest, CA, skatepark to find out which stance would reign supreme for one whole year. Over 100 of the biggest names in skateboarding came out to the etnies skatepark to represent Goofy-footers (right foot forward) and Regular-footers (left foot forward) the world over, in what has become one of the most anticipated annual skate contests.

Jereme Rogers, Nyjah Huston, Rodolfo Ramos, Greg Lutzka, Ronnie Creager, Colt Cannon and a host of others represented Goofy-footers around the world, while Ryan Sheckler, Chris Cole, Tony Cervantes, Chris Troy, Andrew Reynolds and Billy Marks battled for Regulars. After nearly four hours of nuclear-powered skating the Goofies let the Regulars know in no uncertain terms that they rule.

It was generally accepted that without the help of 11 year-old Nyjah Huston, Goofies would have been trounced by Regulars. But, as luck would have it, the pint-sized powerhouse threw down switch heel flip after heel flip down the 10-step stairs to not only win it for his team, but also to nab the MVP award and an extra $1500. In the overall points standings, Jereme Rogers placed 1st, awarding him $10,000, Huston placed 2nd, earning him another $5000, and Rodolfo Ramos placed 3rd, earning him a cool $2500

Ryan Sheckler came out swinging hard for Regulars, a performance that earned him the MVP award for his team, but ultimately wasn’t enough for victory. Chris Cole, the competing machine who won this year’s Hammers vs. Bangers contest in Ohio, helped make this GvR the closest points race in its three-year history. The qualifying Regular team members all took home $500 for their efforts. They’ll be looking for blood next year.

This is the second year in a row that Team Goofy has put the smack down on Team Regular, and the second year that Jereme Rogers has won 1st place. Last year, at the 2nd annual GvR, the Goofies stomped the Regulars to regain their pride after losing badly at the inaugural contest in 2004.

But, etnies’ GvR is not just a contest between skaters of different stance persuasions. Every year GvR is host to the etnies Girl Push Jam, the Ladies Bowl Jam, the Pro Bowl and Grand Master Bowl. Omar Hassan, Rune Glifberg and Brian Patch tore up the Pro Bowl contest to take the top three spots, but were over-shadowed by all the big guns who came out of the woodwork for the Grand Master Bowl.

The legendary lineup for the Grand Master Bowl included Steve Caballero, Lance
Mountain, Lester Kasai, Jeff Grosso, Micke Alba, Steve Alba... should I go on? OK. Jesse Martinez, Steve Steadham, Mike Rogers (read the Mike Rogers interview here), and even GvR announcer Dave Duncan were there, skating like it 1985–gray hair and all. It was insane. Cab let everyone know that he still rules by winning the event. Mountain placed 2nd and Kasai took home 3rd.

But, the women would not be outdone and shredded up the skatepark in the Push Jam and Bowl Jam contests. Marisa Del Santos, Evelien Bouilliart, and Lacey Baker snagged the top three spots in the Push Jam. And Holly Lyons, Cressey Rice and Heidi Ftizgerald podiumed in the Bowl Jam. The women took home more than $10,000 in prize money when it was all said and done.

By the way, the Beastie Boys played a free show at the etnies compound Saturday night. And skate legend Ray Barbee provided musical entertainment for the final awards ceremony on Sunday. So, don’t freakin’ miss next year’s GvR. It’s bad for your health.
