Rip-It Trick of the Day and Progression Session Slopestyle Results From Grand Prix

Feb 06 2007 / Mt Bachelor, OR

The Paul Mitchell Progression Session wrapped up the final day of competition at the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix with Waterville Valley Academy rider Ian Thorley (Marquette, MI) and Jenniver Jones of Great Britain claiming victories in slopestyle. U.S. Snowboarding pro rider Scotty Lago (Seabrook, NH), who was third in the exhibition, stomped the $2,500 Rip-It Trick of the Day with a switch backside 900. The Progression Session slopestyle will air Sunday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET on Versus.

Thorley's second run, featuring a switch backside rodeo, frontside 720 and a backside 720, was good enough for 43.0 points, toppling second place finisher and Waterville Valley teammate Tim Humphreys by 1.5 points. Lago, who landed a frontside 720 and a backside 900 along with the Rip-It Trick of the Day, was third with a score of 39.9. Rounding out the women's podium was U.S. Snowboarding riders Jordan Karlinski (Aspen, CO) with 36.9 points and Stratton Mountain School rider Ellery Hollingsworth (Stratton Mountain, VT) with 30.8.

As a Five Star Ticket to Ride event, riders will receive points toward the overall TTR World Tour, a culmination of independent freestyle snowboard events globally recognized as a tour and tied together by the TTR rating system.

"The weather was great today, such a good day for a contest," said Lago, who also won the Rip-It Energy Drinks award at the Breckenridge Progression Session quarterpipe. "I landed both my runs, but I would have liked to have been on the podium. The speed changed throughout the day on the course and you had to make a lot of adjustments as the afternoon went on, but it was a good contest."

After cutting their teeth on the Chevrolet Revolution Tour, both Thorley and Humphreys have been traveling the competition circuit together for the last couple of seasons.

"I'm in the same position Tim was last year, he won the Progression Session last year at Bachelor and is now killing it, so hopefully this will do the same for me," said Thorley, who credited coach Bill Enos for helping him get to the Grand Prix tour. "It's definitely a huge accomplishment for me to be in the top three with Tim and Scotty."

For Karlinski, who rides for U.S. Snowboarding in snowboardcross, slopestyle and halfpipe is just part of being a snowboarder. "I've always been into riding slope and pipe," she said. "I love hitting rails and boxes, so it's fun to get onto the podium in this contest. The Grand Prix's are always so well organized with great halfpipes and solid feature's on the slope course - so they're fun."

The Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix concludes Feb. 22-25 at Tamarack Resort, located in the Payette River Mountains of Idaho. The event will host the series only SBX competition and will also crown the overall Grand Prix champions for men and women following the third and final halfpipe competition, set for a pipe with 22-foot walls.
