DS: I went to an all girls school. I was really rebellious and got kicked out in ninth grade. I couldn’t conform to the uniform. I smoked cigarettes at school, got drunk and all of that. I failed out even though I was smart. I ended up at this other school where the principal supported my surfing and she let me go surfing whenever I wanted. I graduated with honors from there because I was so supported. My education became the ocean.

Lat34: When did you start modeling?
DS: I have been modeling for myself in front of the mirror since I was a little girl. I used to change my outfits like 6 times a day. Roxy found me on the beach and that catapulted my surf and modeling career. It was easy I traveled all over the world. Roxy was just starting then and I became the face of Roxy. It was Veronica Kaye, this other girl Sanoe Lake.  We were all best friends.

Lat34: How did you get off the party train?
DS: I saw that road with my friends who were doing coke all night. They were in jail and on welfare and stuff. It is so easy to have that life when you come from a tough background. People think of Hawaii as paradise but it’s different if you are not a tourist. It’s tough. So I realized one day what a chance I had to do more with my life and I took it.

Lat34: What do you do when someone drops in on you?
DS: It depends. If it’s the fifth time I definitely let them know. If it’s a big wave it can be dangerous. If it’s an experienced surfer I will drop in on them next time.

Lat34: Are girl surfers competitive with each other?
DS: It depends which girls you are talking about. In contests we are. I am competitive in contests. Not with you and your friends. If there is a photog on the beach the girls can get a little ruthless.

Lat34: Have you ever pulled a girls leash?
DS: We call that a Lance Burkhart. I have only done that when we are messing around and I want the wave they are on. I am not a viber in the water. I wait for my turn. I can’t stand surfing with girls like that. Those are the real sharks in the water. The girls who just gotta have it.

Lat34: Gnarliest reef rash you’ve ever gotten?
DS: Thirteen stitches in my head. I stuck my fingers in the wound and could feel the top of my eyeball. I don’t like doctors, so if I get hurt I will super glue my cuts shut unless it’s a bad one like that. I pulled into a wave and the fin bit me really hard. It was a beautiful sunny day and all of the tourists were out and I was walking up the beach with blood gushing out of my face. Classic.

Lat34: What’s the worst bathing suit mishap you’ve ever had?
DS: Actually the other day I was surfing with a filmer and I was coming toward him so I jumped into the lens to be funny and my top completely came off and I know he and his friends are watching that one over and over. The life of a surfer girl. It’s crazy.

Lat34: Shark stories, any good ones?
DS: I used to not be afraid of sharks at all when I was growing up and the lifeguards used to call us out when it was perfect waves and we would stay. Yesterday I was at this great spot and no one was out there and I didn’t want to go out because after Bethany Hamilton we are all kind of a little scared. I see sharks all the time. I even had one rub up against me one time. You see them when you snorkel and I even used to take people diving and show tourists. I guess ‘cause I see Bethany now and surf with her I wonder if I would have the dedication she has to get out there again.

Lat34: Music, how long have you been playing and how did you get into it?
DS: I started playing and surfing around the same time. When I was an early teen. It was my sanity to unwind. I am competitive with myself more than anyone so I learned songs from my Dad and taught myself.

Lat34: Why did you get asked to play at the Republican Convention and how was that?
DS: God….that created quite a hater club. Honestly I never knew if I would have the chance to play on the same stage as my heroes like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, so I took it. There were 50,000 people there at Madison Square garden. I wanted to get into the crood and get those Republicans jumping around but they were clapping offbeat and were a little stiff. Still it was pretty cool. I am a surfer girl from an Island and I got to play there.

Lat34: Tell me how your music is inspired?
DS: Probably the surfing has the least to do with my music. It has to do with that guy, this guy, how much wine I drink and the chocolate I eat. The small things in life, which end up adding up to all of life.

Lat34: How do music and surfing relate?
DS: Sometimes. I brand them together and I sing songs while surfing but it’s more of my own thing. For me they are really two different things that rarely meet in the middle. My music is more about the feeling you have when you stole your mom’s car when you were 16 and you got caught by the cops. That feeling you have when adrenaline hits. There is more to life than surfing even though surfing is one of my huge passions.

Lat34: What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed?
DS: The biggest wave I almost died on I got held under and blacked out and woke up on my board and don’t know how. I will surf a 12 foot face and no bigger than that. I cringe up and cry like a little girl when they get super big.

Have you ever been held under and if so for how long?
Definitely. Every time you surf and you get held down for a long time you go from this is fun I am on a roller coaster to ‘Oh crap. I need to get some air.’

Lat34: How badass do you think your sport is compared to other extreme sports?
DS: As badass as it gets. Surfing is a hard sport. It can be really hard on a big day. It’s way worth it though. The repercussions of going out when it’s challenging are worth it.

Lat34: Do surfer girls have groupies like surfer boys?
DS: Big time. Check out my My Space page. Everyday there are requests from guys who want to date me and marry me. They write “Can I take you tandem surfing?” Guys who don’t even surf. One guy said “Can you play me like you play your guitar?” The funniest line ever.

Lat34: Worst pickup line you’ve ever heard at the beach?
DS: Is that Windex on your bathing suit because I can sure see myself in it.

Lat34: When you started surfing were you addicted right away?
DS: The first wave I rode I knew that was it. I was done. I wanted to do that for the rest of my life. Hence the crowded line-ups every where you go. Most people know that feeling once they try it.

Lat34: Why are surfer girls so sexy?
DS: Because we are always wet.

Lat34: One piece of advice for a new surfer?
DS: The smaller the bikini the more waves you’ll catch if you’re a girl.

Lat34: And for a guy?
DS: The bigger the balls the bigger waves you’ll get.
