Girl On: Daize Shayne Hangs Ten Better Than You

Longboard world champion, rockstar with an album out, model—easy to see why she’s Lat34’s pick of the week for a female athlete

 
Growing up in Lanaikai, Hawaii Daize Shayne learned two important lessons: Respect for the ocean and respect for the culture she lived in. Being a tow-head kid in Hawaii can be rough because you are instantly a target and you’re never local no matter how long you’ve been there. “I got cornered all the time by girls wanting to beat me up. I was the white girl, I was skinny and I always hung with the boys because I liked to get dirty and play in the mud. The boys really liked me so the girls got jealous.”

These days Daize has made peace with those girls and they are some of her best friends, but only after they realized that Daize wasn’t there to kiss the boys, she actually wanted to charge big waves with them and took some serious beat downs from both the ocean and the guys. “The guys were also mean to me for a while. They would hide my board, put soap on it instead of wax, you name it. The boys hazed me pretty hard. Then I started dropping in on them with a bikini on and they shut up.”

Daize's thoughts on competition>

Daize started surfing because she saw that growing up in Hawaii can be rough on a kid. Lucky for her she discovered surfing at a time when the other kids around her were getting into drugs and sex. “I was no goody two-shoes, but you can’t surf with a hang over, so I just prioritized surfing. It’s one or the other if you want to be good.” This paid off quickly because by the time the was in her mid-teens, she was spotted surfing by someone from Quiksilver. They were starting up a new line called Roxy and asked her if she could model for them, making her officially their first Roxy model. On the pro surf side they had world champion ripper Lisa Anderson, but the most visible face for the brand with the feel-good Aloha vibe was Daize. This is not to say Daize wasn’t a good competitive surfer. She went on to become the longboard world champion and holds that title still today even though her focus has shifted to a career as a musician.

Becoming a rockstar hasn’t been quite as easy or accidental as becoming a world traveling Roxy model, but Daize is right where she wants to be. In late June her first album “Live Your Dreams” came out and she went on tour in Japan and Europe. And while music has taken center stage in her life, she insists that surfing is still a major component to her day-to-day life. She gets in the water nearly every day when she’s home in California and when she can take tropical trips she heads out for a big adventure or just back to Hawaii to see her childhood friends and family.
Lat34 caught up with Daize in California and here’s what she had to say:
 
Lat34: What was it like to grow up in Hawaii?
DS: So awesome! My whole life I slept in a bathing suit. It was under my school clothes. It was like wearing underwear but you could wear it all day long without having to wear clothes.
