Adams Claims 4th FMX World Championship Title

Oct 11 2006 / Los Angeles, CA
Fifteen of the world’s best FMX riders arrived in L.A. Saturday to fight for the right to be called the World Champion of FMX at the 2006 LG Action Sports Championships. It was the last FMX LG championship event for the year and tantalized riders with the richest single event purse of $100,000.

Nate Adams, Mike Mason, Jeremy Lusk, Beau Bamburg and Robbie Maddison were just a few of the big names to battle it out in this much anticipated event at the L.A. County Fair in Pomona, CA. And at the end of it all, Nate Adams once again proved that he is undoubtedly “The Man.”

Nate Adams has been crowned the LG World Champ four times in a row now after taking home the $30,000 1st place prize. In Mike Mason’s words, “Right now, Nate looks pretty much unbeatable. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth.” Adams, who was favored to win this event, has a giant resume of career wins including more than seven X Games medals and several wins at the 2005 and 2006 Dew Tour. He was one of the first riders to land a backflip to no-handed lander in competition. Adams was also the first rider ever to defeat Travis Pastrana in competition.

Mike Mason put on a stellar performance that was good enough to land him the 2nd place spot. Mason has had a solid 2006 season and came into the LG World Championships fresh from a big 2nd place finish at the Dew Tour in San Jose, CA. Mason, last year’s 4th place finisher at the LG Action Sports Tour, is a major up-and-comer in FMX after leaving arenacross in 2004.

Beau Bamburg finished in 3rd place after a super high energy run. The wild Oregonian who’s known to be crazy enough to pull off a backflip to sterilizer (landing with legs on top of the handlebars), threw out backflip after backflip variation. Bamburg is one of the most consistent riders in the world and continues to threaten Adams’ dominance.

While its no surprise that Nate Adams won the LG FMX World Championships again, his 5th place finish in the initial qualifying round was a bit of a shocker. The 15 riders only had one chance to qualify for Saturday’s final round, out of which the top eight riders advanced. And instead of Adams’ name at the top of the list, it was Beau Bamburg, Mike Mason, Jeremy Lusk and Robbie Maddison who initially beat out Adams.

Apparently it was just an anomaly because Adams came back to thrash the competition. Better luck next time boys. With Travis Pastrana weaning himself off the FMX scene in favor of rally car racing, it looks like Adams is the next heir apparent of freestyle. The question is, who has the power to knock him off his throne?
