Filmmaker Profile: Sally lundburg & Elizabeth pepin, producers/directors, one winter story

Sally Lundburg: Sally Lundburg is a mixed-media artist and filmmaker based on the Big Island of Hawaii. She began making short films seven years ago while attending The San Francisco Art Institute, where she earned her Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Sally found that her work as an artist deeply influenced the look and feel of her movies, and eventually founded Frank Films, a production company that is dedicated to bridging experimental film techniques with documentary sensibilities.

Elizabeth Pepin: Elizabeth Pepin currently works as a Producer and Associate Producer at KQED-TV in San Francisco. She also makes independent documentaries outside of KQED with Sally Lundburg. Elizabeth has more than ten years of production experience in the Bay Area and has won four Emmy Awards for her documentary film work. In addition to filmmaking, Elizabeth is also a photographer and author. She has been the principal photographer for two women’s surf books and recently wrote a book on the history of San Francisco’s Fillmore Jazz district, Harlem of the West, published by Chronicle Books in 2006. Elizabeth holds a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism from San Francisco State University.

Lat34: Hometown?

Sally Lundburg: Paauilo, Big Island, Hawaii

Elizabeth Pepin: San Francisco, CA

Lat34: Age?
Sally Lundburg: 35
Elizabeth Pepin: 42

Lat34: How many years filming?

Sally Ludburg: 7 years shooting film, but I’ve been taking photos for 13 years

Elizabeth Pepin: 10 years as a filmmaker, and 25 years as a photographer

Lat34: Favorite location to shoot?

Sally Lundburg: There is something really visceral and hypnotic to me about shooting from a moving car. The streaks of land and sky streaming past, the garbled sounds of radio and scraps of conversation that you catch in traffic, the glimpses of lives… I could do it over and over.

Elizabeth Pepin: Anywhere near or in the ocean. I am fascinated by the coast and the people who are attracted to it, which is reflected in my films and photographs. The ever changing light and mood of the water, the unique connection people have to the ocean, the challenges of shooting in such an environment; I could film and photograph at the coast every day for the rest of my life and be very happy.

Lat34: How many films have you made?

Sally Lundburg: I’ve produced and edited 5 short films, in addition to One Winter Story. This was my first collaborative film (co-produced and co-directed with Elizabeth Pepin), as well as being the longest, at 1 hour.

Elizabeth Pepin: I’ve produced and directed two full length documentaries – One Winter Story with Sally Lundburg, and Coastal Clash with Christa Resing. I’ve also been associate producer on more than 18 PBS documentaries and series.

Lat34: What is your current project?

Sally Lundburg: Elizabeth and I make a great creative documentary team, and definitely want to work together again,…currently I’m in the development stage of a film on homelessness in Hawaii. Also,  my husband and I are just finished building an art studio on our property in Hawaii, and we look forward to working in it soon!

Elizabeth Pepin: I don’t seem to ever be without a project. Currently I’m finishing up the principal photography on a new women’s surf book that will be released in mid-2007. I’m also collaborating with the Smithsonian Institution on a museum exhibit based on my jazz history book, Harlem of the West, which will travel around the country for the next three years. Lastly, I’m beginning research and development on another documentary about the problems facing our coastlines – this time focusing on water based issues. Sally & I plan to make a film together again – most likely one of the two films we are individually developing.SallyElizabeth Films

Lat34: Athletes or teams you've worked with?

Sally Lundburg: Professional athletes? Just Sarah Gerhardt.

Elizabeth Pepin: As a filmmaker, just the athletes in our film. But as a surf photographer, I’ve photographed many of the top women surfers, and a few top male surfers as well.

Lat34: Favorite bands/ music?

Sally Lundburg: I tune out music a lot of the time unless it’s live.

Elizabeth Pepin: My fav bands/music changes every day, depending on my mood. Music is extremely important in my life and I like everything except the Grateful Dead.

Lat34: Are you excited for 2007?
Sally Lundburg: Good things are definitely happening.

Elizabeth Pepin: 2007 looks to be the best year of my life – but I say that every year!

Lat34: Whats the one thing people should know about life?

Sally Lundburg: Leave people and places better than you found them…and be thankful.

Elizabeth Pepin: Find something in life that makes you excited to get out of bed every morning.
