Top Five Tricks and Slams in X Games History

Oct. 19 2007 / Los Angeles
We're looking at the top tricks and slams (the slams are here) of the X Games, which is considered the granddaddy of action sports events. There are dozens of amazing tricks that have been landed in its history so picking five is pretty tough, but here are five huge tricks that changed history and they were all stuck at the X Games.

1. Tony Hawk Land the First 900 -- 1999

It's somewhat ordinary now to see the 900 landed in competition -- heck, Shaun White is expected to land the first 1080 any day now -- but this was truly a first that changed the face of the sport. After the 900, barriers began to fall and it was thanks to Hawk's persistance and skill. The only reason White's 1080 seems possible is because Hawk did the impossible eight years ago. And how did it feel? "It was more like a sense of relief than excitement," Hawk says.

2. Travis Pastrana's Double Back Flip - 2006

So the question probably is, "Why is this not number one?" Well, it's no doubt one of the craziest and most exciting stunts ever landed at the X Games, but it wasn't the first time it had been landed. Pastrana had landed it before (outside of competition) and it was a popular clip on YouTube. And at this year's X Games another rider tried to land the trick and came close, showing that even the monumental can become, well, ordinary, in just a year's time.

3. Mat Hoffman -- No-Handed 900-Degree Spin -- 2002

There are a couple of big BMX tricks that could have made this list (Dave Mirra's double back flip in BMX Park; Stephen Murray's double back flip in BMX Dirt) so why pick Hoffman? It really comes down to the degree of difficulty -- you don't see double back flips being thrown around, that's true, but you don't see anyone doing the No-Handed 900 spin. So based on rarity alone, you gotta go with Hoffman.

4. Brian Deegan/Travis Pastrana -- The 360 aka “Mulisha Twist” -- 2003

There have been plenty of notable FMX tricks that were first unvieled at X Games, including the 360 -- a crazy trick that requires actually rotating the bike around and bringing it back to land without crashing and killing one's self. Deegan developed this trick and unveiled it at X Games IX and then broke a femur and two wrists doing it at Winter X. So safe, it ain't. Travis Pastrana followed Deegan with a miss of this trick, then nailed it, too.

5. Kevin Robinson's Double Flair -- 2006

Kevin Robinson has competed in every X Games since it launched so it's only right that he gets recognized for landing one of the craziest tricks in X Games history. It's too bad that it happened the same night as Chad Kagy's flatspin double tail whip -- another first -- but K-Rob will get the nod as his trick is one that has been tried and missed by many others and now he shows it's possible.
