The Battle For 3rd Begins

Oct 12 2006 / Orlando, FL
2006 has been a wild rollercoastering year in FMX. Travis Pastrana started out the year strong winning most every contest he entered, only to drop out of FMX in favor of Rally Car racing. Nate Adams has been diabolically consistent all year winning or placing second to Pastrana. Now with Pastrana out of the picture Adams looks like he will reign supreme for some time to come.

But, right behind Adams is a slew of veterans and up-and-comers who are foaming at the mouth for a chance to strike. The Playstation Pro in Orlando is their last chance to do so at the 2006 Dew Tour. Mike Mason (currently 3rd overall), Jeremy Lusk (4th overall), Jim McNeil (5th overall), Robbie Maddison (6th overall), and Adam Jones (7th overall) are all within 40 points of each other in the overall standings. So, this weekend will be the big showdown to see who will stand on the podium.

Nate Adams pretty much has 1st place wrapped up with 350 points accumulated so far. He could start his engine and stall it out on the course and still win the season title. In Mike Mason’s words, “Right now, Nate looks pretty much unbeatable. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth.” Pastrana, who missed the last Dew Tour stop in San Jose and will not compete in Orlando, has 275 points – enough to guarantee him a 2nd place finish on the season. Mike Mason or Jeremy Lusk would have to win this weekend’s finals to claim 2nd place – and it’s safe to say that Nate Adams isn’t going to let that happen very easily.

So, that leaves 3rd place up for grabs. Mike Mason, Jeremy Lusk and Jim McNeil are at the top of the list and are within 10 points of each other. Mason is one of the hottest newcomers to FMX and is fresh from a big 2nd place finish at the LG FMX World Championships in Pomona, CA.

But, watch out for Lusk, McNeil, Robbie Maddison and Adam Jones who are all in the running. Lusk has a big bag of tricks and has found his stride just in the past few months. He finished 3rd at the San Jose leg of the Dew Tour and 4th in Portland prior to that. The rest are all within striking distance of the 3rd place spot on the season, but definitely have their work cut out for them. Stay tuned for the latest right here.
