Despite all the attention that BMX SX is getting in San Jose at the Dew Tour Toyota Challenge, it’s safe to say that the BMX Dirt riders are ready for a serious showdown. San Jose is the 4th leg of the five stop Dew Tour series, and therefore an extremely important one for the top overall contenders. Anthony Napolitan and Luke Parlsow are the overall points leaders, but Ryan Nyquist and Cameron White are close behind.

The top three spots in Thursday’s Dirt Prelims in San Jose were all clinched by riders from Down Under. Ryan Guettler, Luke Parlsow and Cameron White took first, second and third, and look prepared to keep it that way in Friday’s Finals.

Cameron White came into Thursday’s Dirt Prelims fresh from winning the BMX Dirt Finals at the Vans Invitational in Portland , and ready to defend his win. We caught up with to ask about his big win and plans for the rest of the season.

SL: Did you surprise yourself with your win in Portland ?

CW: Yeah, I guess. I didn’t really go out to win. I just went out to do that run. It’s been bugging me since X Games. And I’m stoked that I pulled it off. So, surprised? Yeah, because that’s the first big contest I’ve ever really won.

SL: Was Portland a career highlight for you?

CW: Yeah, definitely. Because my mom and dad were there from Australia . So, to have them see that contest where I pulled the run that I wanted was great.

SL: How’re you feeling in San Jose ?

CW: Pretty good. Pretty good. I didn’t crash in Prelims, so I’m pretty happy with that.

SL: How is the course here in San Jose ? You drop in to it from a tower, then have three jumps with a 90 degree berm to the 4th jump. How is this compared to the Portland course that had a 180 degree berm after the third jump?

CW: Love it. Absolutely love it. It brings out a lot of different stuff. It’s not just three straight jumps in a row. And I like [the Portland] course, but I think [ San Jose ] is better.

SL: Overall, what do you think your strengths and weaknesses are?

CW: I just try to go out there and have fun. I don’t think about it much. In competitions, if I do the run I want to do then I’m happy. It doesn’t really matter if I come first or last. And weaknesses? Well, I eat junk food… a lot. So, uh, that’s my only one!

SL: What’s your goal for the rest of this season?
CW: Stay on my bike and have fun.
