Update: 10/28/06

Hey Lat34....how's it going out there?
I'm down here in Dallas for the LG Action Sports Championships, I forgot how much I love this city. Just got done with prelims a couple of hours ago, finished in 3rd. I'll take it. I'm just always happy when I qualify, that's the goal. Having a bit of a tough day today, I'm riding with a fever that I caught from my little ones at home. My daughter, Shaye, has been sick for about a week now and my son, Kevin Jr., is catching it. I'm looking forward to having some dinner and getting up in bed early tonight to try to sleep this fever off.

Aside from that, I still love this ramp. I think this LG ramp and Tony's Boom Boom ramp are in a tie for first, I would love to ride these ramps more often, I'm thinking I am going to make more LG events next year for a couple of reasons, and this ramp is one of them. Another reason is definitely the vibe of this contest, it's real laid back and real positive. I wish they could all be like this. Thanks out there for checking out my blog, I'll update you tomorrow after finals...stay tuned!
Later,
Krob

Hey there Lat34,

I apologize for not being able to write my blog since the Dew Tour, I was down in Orlando for 4 days after the event with a broken computer. I'm back home now after an awesome trip to Orlando. I want to start out by saying thank you to all of you who took the time to vote for the Playstation Trick of the Year and vote my double flair as the winner. It is so awesome to have put so much time and effort into a trick that I love and have it recognized by you all. Thank you so much again for voting for me!

I also want to say thanks to the Dew Tour for putting on such a great tour again this year. I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out, I'm psyched for Jamie & Chad, they both had a great year. My big goal for the year was riding away on my double flair, I
accomplished that, so I am very happy. I'm looking forward to surgery next week, healing, and starting all over again. Next years goal is to put the trick in my run, I'm just planning on working on that all winter.

Thanks again to all of you out there that have supported me over the years.

Take Care.

Well, a week ago today, I definately didn't think I'd be on my way to ride my bike at Woodward right now...but, thanks to my full face Thor helmet, I am. I wrote about the hectic week I had last week, going to ride some dirt jumps, etc... My first stop was Steven Murray's house in Orange County, which started off great.  We got there in the afternoon after having a visit with my surgeon, Dr. Chow, in San Diego (setting
up surgery times for my shoulder & elbow in november).

We get there, get to see Stevens adorable kids and check out his new loop in the back yard along with some insane dirt jumps,  I was pumped, couldn't wait to ride them, it's been a while.  So, we gear up, start warming up, start getting ready to ride the loop. Some of us get up and ride it, it was awesome, definitely different feeling than the Huck Jam loop I was used to because it turned in the opposite direction, but made it through...had tons of fun with that.

Then, as it starts getting a little darker we decide to ride some of the jumps.  I'm
feeling good, riding some of them.  I get to the big set, just getting a feel for it, I get to the last jump, try to set up to do a tuck no hander and just feel myself going over the bars on this 13 foot landing. It happened so fast, I couldn't get my hands off my handlebars in time to break my fall, so I took it right to the head.  I felt my neck just
seize up.  I fell so hard, that I almost  bounced to my feet, jump up quick and think "I broke it" I instantly laid back down on the ground and everyone comes running over.  I just kept thinking "I just broke my neck"

About 5 guys helped get my helmet off while someone called the ambulance.  I ask someone to hand me my phone, call my wife to let her know I was still laying there   waiting for the ambulance to come get me, tell her I think I'm really  injured
and I'll call her when I get to the ER.  After about 20 minutes or so, ambulance comes, puts me in a collar and on a board and brings me to the worst hospital I have ever been to.  Probably the worst service I have ever ever received.  They kept me in this ER doing tests, giving me total different answers, for 13 hours!  First CT scan looked clean, 2nd one, they tell me I fractured T4 in my back-  won't require surgery, but out for the rest of the season.  After 7 Xrays and 3 CT scans, a back specialist comes in and says "looks clean to me"-so, after thinking I broke my back for half a day, come to  find out, I had a bad bruise back there.

They release me and I head back to San Diego to see Dr. Chow again.  He looked over all my slides and determined that I have a bad sprain and some bruising to my
disc.  Other than that, I can take the collar off and go at my own pace. He did say that it was incredibly thankful I was wearing my full face helmet though. The way I fell directly to the top of my head made my head fold down and if I didn't have the mouth guard there to drive into my chest, my neck would have just rolled.  Also, have to say thanks to Thor for my helmet, this thing ended up with a   huge dent in the top of it and I didn't even get knocked out.  I'm psyched on these helmets, this is the second time in a month that I have taken a huge hit to the head and not got knocked out.
 K Rob Injury
Definitely makes me feel a lot safer riding this helmet. So, I feel back to square one as far as riding goes.  I got back on my bike 2 days ago, pretty frustrating start.  I was hanging up front  and back wheel, landing low on anything I tried.  I'm still so sore, but trying to just get through it.  Final stop of the Dew Tour is next week in Orlando, then have the LG ASA event in Dallas the week after and then I'm done for the season.  My body is in desperate need  for a break.

I'm looking forward to riding next week at the comp, I'm bringing my whole family with me-my wife, 2 kids, and my mom & dad are coming.  Should be fun.

Standing below the ramp where the crash took place, Kevin displays the IV that is still in his arm after leaving the hospital in frustration.

Playstation is holding their Best Trick contest again, this time it's for the Best Trick of the Year...I would really appreciate your vote again, it was definitely thanks to you all out there that helped me win Trick of the Week 2 weeks ago.  Thanks again for your vote, it means a lot to get recognized for landing my double flair again.

Take Care out there and next weeks contest is for you!

Hey Lat34,

Just wanted to quickly say thank you to all of you who voted for me for the "Playstation Trick of the Week"-it really means a lot to have such supportive fans out there. Like I have said before, this means so much to me and this is definitely keeps me going. I'll keep pushing it out there for ya.

On another note, just had the ASA LG Action Sports Finals yesterday in San Diego. I had a blast at this event. It really was so much fun. Got to San Diego on Friday, rode the ramp for the first time that night-it was perfect. The new ramp feels so good, gotta say that aside from the Huck Jam Ramp, this is my new favorite ramp. Finals and Prelims were on Saturday, had a great day, no pressure, no animosity on the ramp-just a real fun day of riding. I had a good  day, ended up in 1st place, I'll take it. Just want to say thanks to Mark Shays who puts on the event for a great contest. I will
definitely be in Dallas for the Championships next month. I tried a double flair in my second run, almost had it. So, me and some of my good friends have some fun in store for the next week. Tomorrow, we're heading up to LA to Steven Murray's house to ride some dirt jumps. Some of you may be surprised to know that I do actually ride more than just vert. My buddy, Jared Souney, is going to be doing some filming for the upcoming Hoffman Bikes video, so me and Anthony Napolitan are going to be having some fun in Steven's backyard.

Tuesday night, my cousin Gary Balletto, is going to be at the Staples Center for The Contender finals. The Contender is the show that Sylvester Stallone put on last year with all the Pro Boxers. My cousin is a pro boxer that was on the show this year. He did great, made it to the end and got eliminated last week. But, he's flying out to watch the fight, so we're gonna watch it too. Looking forward to it. I love boxing.

Then Wednesday, me, Anthony, Tom Stober and Jared are heading to Vegas for Inner Bike. It's been a while since I"ve come out to this event, so I'm looking forward to it. While we're there, we're going to be doing some more filming at TJ Lavins house. I'm so excited to ride some dirt jumps, it has been a while, been riding so much vert lately, this will be a nice change for me. After that, back home to my wife and kids, Shaye & Kevin jr. The season is almost over, about a month to go. I'm starting to get excited for a little down time, have some shoulder surgery scheduled for early November out here in San Diego with Dr. Chow. Can't wait to just get this shoulder (and elbow) fixed!

Check back soon.

I just want to say thank you all so much for those of you who voted
for me on the Playstation Trick of the Week. I'm so psyched that my double flair was considered best trick. It means a lot to me. This is definitely more exciting to me than winning any contest. I have always been about the progression of BMX, I'm just happy to be a part of it. Thanks a bunch everybody!

What's up Lat 34? So...San Jose and I definitely don't get along. Last year, left there in a coma, this year left in 4th place.  As I wrote in my last blog, prelims were sort of a nightmare for me, just barely made it in in 9th place. I ended pulling myself together after prelims, calmed myself down, I was pretty disappointed with how I was riding. Friday was a whole new day, I was looking forward to finals all day, feeling pretty rushed though because I knew I was leaving directly after finals to jump on a plane to come back to PA.

Anyway, my first final run started off feeling great, my first 5 walls felt good, then I slid out on a superman.  So my plans for having a good solid first run were out. That's 3 runs in a row that didn't go as planned. My second finals run went a little better, I made it through a whole run, forgot to pull my opposite no handed flair at the end of my run, but it landed
me in 4th, which at that   point, I just wanted to make top 5.  So,after both runs, I was still   pretty disappointed with how the whole thing went, I thought, what the hell, I'll try a double flair when the comp is over.  So, after Jamie's last run, which by the way, he rode amazing...after his last run, he said to me "Kev, why don't you go do a double flair?" I said,   "Alright", then he told me that I have to pull it.  I just kind of had it in my head that I was gonna pull it.  I rolled in threw it on my 3rd wall, started coming around thinking, wow, I'm gonna pull it. I landed it rolling away for the 2nd  time ever thinking, " Holy cow, I can't believe it just went around that easy"-I'm definitely feeling like I'm starting to fully get this trick figured out now. Hoping to throw it in a run soon, that's my next goal.
Landing it in San Jose got me nominated for "Playstation Trick of the Week" on the Dew Tour website, which I'm psyched about.  Make sure to vote, I'd appreciate it.  Again, thanks to all of you out there that have supported me over the years, you all really are the reason I keep riding.

Hey all. what a night. I ended up 9th in prelims, haven't done that in a while. I for a little while there thought i wasn't going to make finals. I was thinking, well I guess i'll pack my stuff up and head home a couple days early, get back and see my kids. But, I did make it in, even though I fell in both of my prelim runs. I guess it happens
sometimes. First run was feeling great, my first few walls were smooth, then I slid out on a flair of all things. No big deal, I have a 2nd run. Then, that one went bad.  My foot slipped the pedal, I fumbled around with that, then I slid out again.  Oh well, I'm in for finals, thankfully.  Hopefully tonight goes a bit better than that. I'm really looking forward to riding tonight. This is sort of a busy few days for me, I have to fly right out tonight after the comp back to PA for my buddy, Mark Podgurski's wedding tomorrow.  Mark builds lots of the ramps at Woodward and is a great friend of mine.  He's marrying a great girl, I'm psyched for him. Gotta go practice.

Hey, what's up Lat 34? I'm psyched to have a blog on this site. I'm looking forward to being able to keep everyone up to date with what's going on in my life...during contests and everyday home stuff. I'm actually out right now at the 4th stop on the Dew Tour in San Jose. I've got a score to settle with this town after last years finals.  Obviously hate bringing up injuries, especially the day of prelims, but last year this was the contest where I took a nasty fall to my head doing an opposite no handed flair. That one ended me up in ICU overnight with a mild coma.  Probably one of my worst head hits ever. After that one, it took me about 5 full months to fully recover. I couldn't speak for close to 2 weeks, my words just wouldn't come out...and what's weird, is when they finally did start coming back-i suddenly got my RI accent back, that was weird.  So, I'm looking forward to riding over the next couple of days.

I've been feeling pretty good lately, still have a nagging shoulder tear that I'm dealing with, but getting through that. Comes with the territory. It's definatly great being out here with my buddies.  It's so great to see how much vert is progressing and how everyone is really pushing themselves to a whole new level.  That's what I love most about riding...just getting on my bike and seeing what I can make it do. I still get just as excited today to ride as I did when I first started riding 25 years ago. Hey, thanks for checking out my blog. I'll keep you up to date with how San Jose goes. Gotta go practice for prelims....
