The nine-day extravaganza called the Bank of the West Beach Games returns to Huntington Beach (“Surf City, USA”) July 21 to 30, 2006. The U.S. Open of Surfing charges the beaches and becomes the Vegas of surfing with more than 350,000 spectators, a host of entertainment stages, peripheral activities and tribes of hardcore fans who pack the sand to watch the competition (check out our photo gallery or exclusive video of last year's highlights).

Among the surf talent coming to take part in the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach this year are:
  • - CJ and Damien Hobgood
  • - Rylan McCart
  • - Gabe Kling
  • - Noi Kaulukukui
  • - Jesse Heilman
  • - Ted Navarro
  • - Ryan Peterson
  • - Rochelle Ballard
  • - Lindsey Baldwin
  • - Holly Beck
  • - Cecilia Enriquez
  • - Kim Hamrock

To date, the 2006 WQS season has been extremely competitive with explosive surfing and upsets happening at almost every event. July saw South African Ricky Basnett defeat top ranked Australian Dayyan Neve at Durban, South Africa’s Mr. Price Pro; the first time a South African as won the event in 28 years. And while Australia and Brazil are currently dominating the WQS tour rankings with Aussie Dayyan Neve in first and Brazil’s Neco Padaratz in second, the US Open looks to be extremely difficult for those looking to gain valuable points due to the fact that 27 of the WCT’s top 45 surfers are competing in the event. As many of the top pros use WQS events to improve their standings for the WCT, the US Open becomes a “who’s who” of professional surfing, with the level of talent unmatched by any other event.

Along with the wave slashers the Soul Bowl returns to Bank of the West Beach Games for some true round wall action. BMX riders and skaters will be charging the ramp throughout the weekend. Also on hand will be the hard luck heroes of freestyle motocross. The moto-madmen will be flying above the crowd showing exactly what FMX means.

There's one big addition to the Games this year and that's Lat34 -- which will be webcasting LIVE the final four days of the event -- Thursday, July 27 to Sunday July 30.
