Thirteen years ago, I was a 15-year old prepubescent (no, I did not hit puberty yet) teen who saw life as one exciting episode of SAVED BY THE BELL. SLATER was my hero and JESSIE was my crush. I was also a hardcore inliner so when I heard a new film about skaters was coming out, I was on board. Back then, hardcore action sports barely got a mention in the lamestream media. The only time we saw anything action sports related was once a year for X Games, and when Zack decided to skate on campus.
KIDS was a film directed by Harmony Korine in 1995 starring such stars as Leo Fitzpatrick, Justin Pierce (RIP), Javier Nunez, and the late great Harold Hunter. It also featured up and coming stars Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny.
The film was rated NC-17, which meant I was not allowed to see it. So I asked my parents to take me to see it. Since they’re open to indie films, they concurred. But even then the theater did not allow me to see it.
So I snuck in through the back thanks to a special Chinese friend of mine. From that day on, the way I looked at street life entirely changed.
Thirteen years later, Harmony Korine completed another movie for the young and curious. It is called SPRING BREAKERS and this time it stars huge movie stars like James Franco, The ATL Twins, and a bunch of other girls that I think Justin Bieber got boned by.
Will today’s generation of TEENS get the same experience. We’ll have to wait and see.
