I was listening to ESPN sports talk radio this morning and as the hosts were going through the list of today’s top sports news, an interesting interview was announced ahead of time. I was quite surprised. It was with Mat Hoffman. I’m not sure if the local LA ESPN jockeys even know who Mat Hoffman is but the interview went pretty well. And as it turns out, Mat’s 30 FOR 30 will be premiering on ESPN. If you haven’t seen the breakthrough series produced by ESPN, you are missing out on some of the most thought provoking and intense television currently hitting the airwaves. You don’t have to be a sports fanatic to enjoy 30 For 30. You just have to be interested in the psyche of the human condition. The first one I saw was about the day OJ SIMPSON ran from the police and the other one I saw was called THE TWO ESCOBARS. You can guess what that one is about.
There is no doubt in my mind that 30 For 30 featuring Mat Hoffman called, THE BIRTH OF BIG AIR, will be no different.
VBS is back with another awesome feature starring Mat in recognition of his ESPN program. Knoxville takes us to meet Mat Hoffman and explains how Mat approaches BMX riding with the reckless abandon of a man who’s both in love with his sport and completely indifferent to pain. More than any other figure in BMX riding and action sports history, Hoffman’s responsible for the the big air tricks, hence the title of the Spike Jonze/Jeff Tremaine/Johnny Knoxville new documentary about Mat, The Birth of Big Air, Despite breaking over 20 bones and getting his arm shattered to bits by a semi-truck, Mat continues to just go for it.
