The women’s movement has come a long way since the days of the suffrage movement in the late 1800’s. Since then, women slowly have been inching their way towards equality of their male counterparts in everything from the jobs to education to athletics. Fast-forward to today, the United States has seen advancement in the women’s movement far beyond any other country in the world. More and more women are winning Nobel Prizes for literature, science, and peace. Barack Obama just signed a bill prohibiting higher wages for males than females for the same job. And if you look at sports, I think it’s safe to say that in some cases, FEMALES have already surpassed males.
Just look at the WNBA in comparison to the NBA. The NBA is full of big men like SHAQ who can easily get to the hole in just a few skips and a jump and still has time to have a RAP career. Or you have the high flyers like Kobe who has star power no matter where he is in the world. They even know Kobe in Lichtenstein.
Juxtapose the NBA with the WNBA and what do you get? In replacing all the dunks and high fly acts; we get real and pure basketball. Great defense and strict fundamentals is what win games. Even though the women aren’t as big as the men, they make up for it with great SPORTSMANSHIP.
Skateboarding definitely sees it share of phenomenal female athletes. When I stopped skating for a while, a young lady named Elisa Steamer came out of Toy Machine and started busting. Don’t think I’m a poser who only knows her because of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater either. I did hear of her but she was just pretty good. Another landmark moment has come for girls in skating.
Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins has become girl to successfully land a 540 McTwist on a halfpipe. Check out the footage at the Tony Hawk Show, which went down this past weekend at the Grand Palais in Paris, France. It’s tight!
