Thus far, I haven’t been so impressed with this year’s submissions for the Skate & Create Series.  It’s hard to put my finger on it exactly but I kind of feel like if you’ve seen one SLO-MO sequence done in an aesthetically eye appealing manner, you’ve seen them all.  Not to downgrade the projects or anything but these submissions look more like camera tests.  Each clip looks as if they could be seamlessly inter-cut with one another and you nobody would ever know they came from separate teams.  When will these teams begin to get clever and create something we’ve never seen before?

Well I think that day has come.  Just judging off the title alone, “DC In The City”, I’m glad there are other guys out there just like ME, who feels it’s not shameful to be a fan of the obvious reference here: “SEX AND THE CITY”.  This DC team is loaded so I’m assuming here that we’ve got at least one skater to represent a character from the show.  Danny Way, the leader, is obviously CARRIERYAN SMITH is slightly on the sexual side so he definitely plays the part of the seductress, SAMANTHA.  JOSH KALIS kind of looks like CHARLOTTE, and Nick Dompierre could be MIRANDA.  I can’t wait!  Let’s watch below.

Basically our idea was to re-create cities by simply printing our black-and-white backdrops, and make the supplied obstacles look like real skate spots. We kept everything really simple to the point of being ghetto at times not to overproduce it and make it as skate as possible. I shot some DC catalog portraits a while back in front of black and white backgrounds and decided to shoot a few skate photos in front of them for sh-ts, and I thought they looked cool. So a few people at DC just took that idea and ran with it by adding two-dimensional elements to the foreground and had a lot fun with it. I especially like the rats. I liked Phelps too, but I’m not too sure how he’ll like it. Hopefully he takes it as a compliment being he’s such a staple of skating in S.F. even though we fucked up, and he’s only four feet tall! We didn’t mean anything by it at all-we’re just not too pro at making sets. Just skate shoes. Sorry, Jake.

DC Teamriders: Danny Way, Ryan Smith, Josh Kalis, MVP Nick Dompierre, Wes Kremer, Marquis Henry.
