When you have grown up in Southern California like I did; you take traveling South of the Border for granted. I have probably been to Rosarito, 50 times over my entire life and have a lot of experience in this far away and exotic land. With all my experience I feel it is my responsibility to share some of my knowledge with you all. Here is a list of 5 things that you should know when traveling to beautiful Rosarito, Mexico:
5. Carne de perro is not the “new carne asada”, its dog. Eat from the street vendors though, it is the best Mexican food you will ever have.
4. If you are lighting off fireworks on the beach while wearing a backpack, full of fireworks. And one of these fireworks shoots into your backpack, take off the backpack, don’t run around thinking it will put out the fire. It won’t.
3. Don’t think the nice young lady from the dive bar you were just drinking in, isn’t a man even though she has bigger hands than you do and a visible Adam’s apple. She’s a dude.
2. Don’t think that booze will kill all the parasites in the water you just drank. Trust me, it doesn’t work.
1. This one is actually serious, don’t pee in the street; unless you like parting with all of the money in your wallet, to keep you from being Chuy’s boyfriend in a Mexican jail.
It’s a little too late for Eric McHenry to take my advice, but here is some news on his win in the “Rosarito Beach Pro AM”:
Residents and tourists of Rosarito Beach were treated to a one of the most talked about surf contests the City of Rosarito has ever hosted, as everyone in attendance was on hand to witness two-time Puerto Escondido Champion Eric McHenry (USA) cruise to one of the most memorable finals in recent memory.
McHenry, who was one of the early favorites to win the contest, pulled off two backside 360’s, and one aerial maneuver on back to back waves to beat out Jose Manuel Trujillo (MEX), Julio Quinones (MEX), and Sam Baugh (USA) in a brilliantly surfed thirty minute final by all competitors. With scores tight, and waves reaching as high as 6? to 7?, McHenry was able to pull off some maneuvers that have made him famous in the world of surfing.
“The progressive level of surfing, combined with the sick waves made for an exciting contest and I was really stoked to win”, said Eric Mchenry. “A huge thanks to all involved in putting on the Rosarito ProAM, all the sponsors, the city, the hotel and all the locals who supported the event. This couldn’t have been done without their support.”
The contest in Rosarito won’t be the last, as FDt Marketing, event organizers for the contest plan to continue negotiations with the City of Rosarito to make sure this contest becomes an annual event for the city and the surfers.
