Chill light on my sight as my ego becomes
A funky child with some words on my tongue
Be like intake of breath and my mouth gets loose
While I scatter my spit I dream of juice
Have you ever made out in dark hallways
Displayed a kiss that made your day or say
Played a track from your record collection

Believe it or not, these are not the words of Poe, Maya Angelou, Homer, or even Mother Goose.  None of these classical poets could ever put into words that “broness” demands.  It takes a special band with special lyricists to put this cacophony of words together and make it sound beautiful. These are the words of a once infamous band that personified the good times of the 90’s.

I know what you’re thinking.  CREED?  Nope!  You will be surprised to learn that this is actually a hip-hop act.  MC HAMMER?  Wrong!  It may not look it but these guys are white.  BEASTIE BOYS?  Wrong again!  It’s actually the great 90’s band 311.

Now for those of you kiddies who never heard of 311, check out the video below.  The lyrics and the music will change your life.

San Juan Capistrano, Calif. – July 8, 2009 – Over 20 action sport brand and media partners are confirmed to participate in the Surfing America Summer Surf Jam Festival.  Booths will be run by Surfing America sponsors PacSun, Billabong, New Era, O’Neill, Rip Curl , Surfline, …lost Enterprises, Hurley, Verizon, Live Nation, Samsung, Nalu’s Island Grill, Coors Light, ESPN/X Games, Red Bull, Globe, Surf Diva, Snuggbuds, FireWire Surfboards, Mavericks Clothing, Selawear, and Thalia Surf Shop, to action sport media outlets FUEL TV, TransWorld SURF Magazine and SURFING Magazine.

No one is messing around either. Billabong is “ready to blow minds,” bringing in their well-traveled Billabong Bus stocked with shwag, a custom Billabong Toyota Matrix equipped with the interactive game Rock Band, and a big screen for playing surf flicks among other things – we have to leave something to the imagination!

With $1 per-play raffle games, O’Neill will offer the chance for concert-goers to go home with a new Psycho I wetsuit.  Quiksilver will host a Kelly Slater model silent auction, and ESPN/X Games will be raffling X Games tickets worth up to $500.00! The range of activities and prizes will provide both a fun atmosphere and a welcomed opportunity for many to both reinvent to an engaged audience and facilitate new initiatives to a targeted market.

Special events taking place include: The New Era Gold Club and Graffiti Lounge, which will host DJ’s in a nightclub atmosphere with Red Bull bar; and the …lost Enterprises Skate District featuring a High Ollie Halfpipe Contest in which concert-goers are encouraged to participate. Both New Era Caps and …lost Enterprises will host “design and purchase your own cap” tents to raise additional funds for Surfing America.

Ticket packages are available at surfingamerica.org/surfjam and are quickly selling out. Packages include complimentary Coors Light, Nalu’s Island Grill plate lunch, Red Bull, Surf Jam event gear and special entry to the official Surf Jam Pre-Party.

A very limited number of VIP tickets will provide entry to the Exclusive Industry VIP Party which will begin one hour before gates open. The party will provide an intimate atmosphere for industry heads and Surf Jam participants to mingle and socialize.

The expected 10,000 attendees are about to have the experience of a lifetime! In the history of surfing in America, there has never been such a unified show of support for a non-profit organization. Surf Jam is the only concert that offers the opportunity to see core action sports brands join together to support youth surfing – the essence of our industry.

It makes perfect sense that the first annual Surf Jam takes place in conjunction with the 311 Unity Tour.

The Surfing America Surf Jam is part of 311’s 2009 Unity Tour – on which the band is joined by Ziggy Marley and The Expendables for 28 shows coast-to-coast.

“We’re stoked to be able to give back to the guys who have been so loyal in their support of Surfing America by offering this wonderful and unique opportunity to connect with the concert scene,” Director Mike Gerard stated. “311 is an icon of this generation and we are proud to be aligned with the Unity Tour.”

100-percent of all funds raised through the Surfing America Summer Surf Jam Festival will be donated to Surfing America to promote youth surfing and the USA Surf Team.
