Do You Have What It Takes To Name A Video Game? Marketing 101

Back in the 80’s, it was a widely acceptable trend to call someone riding their skateboard a “poser” or “poseur”; especially when yelled from the school bus.  The “poser” would then retort with a middle finger.  Everyone would have a good laugh.  But really?  Is that the best we as BOWL HAIRCUT, snot nosed kids could do?  Probably since we were so young, but we were just shadowing our elder schoolmates.  “Poser” is such a generic term.

Believe it or not, most people think they are effective name callers but in reality, they are horrible name callers.  You would assume that naming something is pretty simple but there are a few common errors in name calling that people continuously make.  Look at examples of some of the children of some of the celebrities these days. They’re burning their children at the stake!  Apple Martin?  Brooklyn Beckham?  George Foreman (for a girl)?  That’s just horrible.  And the same can go for companies.  Have you ever heard of POP.com or BIMBO Bread?  Ouch.  Identify these mistakes and then you too can become a good name caller.

1. The name should reflect the subject.
2. Don’t be too meaningful in creating the name.
3. Choose a name that’s easy to pronounce.
4. Using inside jokes or puns does not often work.
5. Sometimes making up a word can be clever.

Now let’s see if you have what it takes to create a name.  VANS, in conjunction with Fuel Industries, is set to launch a new skate video game for the iPhone. But here’s the catch; they want  the fans to be a part of the process, so they’re letting you “Name The Game”. The rules are pretty easy- come up with something really catchy that doesn’t suck and you could win an iPod Touch loaded with the first copy of The Game,” a huge Vans prize pack and some street cred with your crew. Bring your A-game and claim your 15-seconds of fame. Submit your ideas for the name of the game in the comments section at VANS. They will contact the winner through your profile on the VANS.com community by February 9th, 2009.
